Port Germein
Home of the longest wooden jetty in Australia (but not actually the longest.) After Coober Pedy it was a lot more of nothing to see until the Flinders Ranges. We drove a couple hundred km into the Ranges and spent 45 minutes hiking to a great lookout point only for it to start raining buckets just as we got up there... so in the end we didn't see much unfortunately. It was a nice drive at any rate. To redeem the day we drove to Alligator Gorge in Mount Remarkable National Park (I love that name) and did a really cool hike there.
We spent the night in Port Germein which is a tiny little town who's claim to fame is that is has the longest wooden jetty in Australia. (Then I found out later that there's actually a longer one in Western Australia, so Port Germeinians are living a lie.)
Note: EVERY place you go in Australia will boast the
insert naturally occurring or manmade feature here in the .
The jetty was impressive nonetheless and it took us a good 20 min to walk to the end of it in the middle of the night, where we watched some guys fishing and crabbing. When they shook the
crabs out of the traps, they landed with a glowing splash of bioluminessence! We went to the hotel (that's Aussie speak for bar) to meet a few of the locals.
The next day we made a quick but necessary stop in the Clare Valley to do some wine tasting. At Jim Barry's we tasted the world's best Shiraz as voted by some UK wine tasting competition where it was pitted against 9000 others from around the world!
Adelaide is quite a nice city! Doesn't get much attention when competing with Melbourne and Sydney for tourists but I really liked it. There's tons of parkland and some good nightlife. Jesse, Paul and I went to the "
Berlin Cabaret" which was good fun! My favourite bit was Hans in fishnet stockings playing a "selection of German and Swedish folk songs" (ie Alabama Song and Dancing Queen) on accordian and singing in a fake German accent. Then Jesse and I got tattoos.
