Daly River, Litchfield and Crab Claw Island

From Katherine we drove North to Adelaide River and visited my Great Uncle Jack’s grave at the war cemetery. I was named after my great uncle Jack, he is buried up here as he got sick while in the army in the NT during the war. We then cut back down to Daly River with the intention of chasing barramundi and then making our way to Darwin via Litchfield NP. On the way to the Daly we came through some fires (half the NT is burning at this time of year), at one point where the fire came close to the road the road was absolutely covered with goshawks waiting for rats and other little animals to cross the road trying to escape the fire but they all flew off before we could get a photo.

At the Daly River we only caught a lure someone else had lost, the closest we came to a fish was when a massive Barra swam straight past my lure but he couldn’t be coaxed into another go at it. However we were camped at a pub which made up for the lack of fish and we had a good night with a bloke called Wayne who was on holidays with his three kids (who he was encouraging to chase crocodiles).

We took a rough back track into Litchfield, driving through fires (at one point the track itself was alight) and crossing some of the deepest water we have encountered (up to the bonnet) but made it through alright. We spent the night a Tjaynera falls which was a beautiful place for a swim with a large plunge pool at the base of the falls. The next day we drove through the remainder of Litchfield, past Wangi falls and camped at a place called Crab Claw Island on Bynoe Harbour west of Darwin which was all sand flies. The whole peninsula was alight and it was beautiful at night. We put our crab trap in but only caught a small one and were going to hire a dingy to go for a fish but they were all in for a service. I am beginning to think the fishing gods have a problem with us. We also met a bloke called Jayden who was traveling around by himself and had a few drinks and looked at his photos from his recent African safari which were beautiful (definitely my next trip). We also saw some wallabies fighting and gotsome good pics!
