Salvador Dali Tour

If you are not a fan of Dali's work (which Jason very much is), or don't know much about him, hopefully this might bring about some interest.

We rolled into Figures later than planned, on September 7, 2004, and after finding our hostel, we quickly decided it best not to stay in the area. Dark, dingy streets, very unwelcoming. So we found another spot for the night. Not high class by any means, but by the backpackers standards, quite nice. TV, balcony and vey clean. We took full advantage of it; had dinner in our room, then hung out on the patio all night. Really fun, but made the morning a little harder. Needless to say, we were a little under the weather, but luckily we had the car as a refuge. We rested and relaxed with a picnic and headed to the Dali Museum. The town doesn’t really have much more to offer. If Dali wasn’t born here, you’d never hear of it.

The museum was awesome! A very interesting/intriguing place. Dali designed the whole thing himself. From the extreme abstract outside design to the bizarre inner structure(s) and art. The main foyer had a cadillac, claimed to have once belong to AL Capone, with a large bare breasted woman standing on it's hood and a fishing boat balanced on a pole atop the car. If you put a quarter in the machine, it rains inside the car. Everything ranged from the seemingly meaningless abstract to some of the most talented and detailed works you've ever seen. We got to see the famous Mae West Room as well. We spent hours wondering around the place. It was nice to see some of his less publicized works, along with those more well known. There was also a gallery of sketchbooks with notes written all over them; basically small sketches and concepts of his major works, before he began painting them. All in all, we paid the same amount to go to the museum as we did to see Gaudi's cathedral in Barcelona. This was
far more worth it.

After we had our fill of the museum, we head off to Cadaques. It is a small town about 45 minutes north east of Figures. It is where Dali spent a lot of his time near his parents cabin and claims to have drawn a lot

Evidence of the on going rivalry between the two surrealists.
of inspiration from the natural beauty of the area. Most of the sweeping mountains that are constant in Dali's works were modelled from the landscape here. The town was very small. When you enter the limits, a sign tells you to park your car before going into the town as the streets simply are too small. A very quaint and seemingly very relaxed place. Everything moved at a very calm pace. It's an old fishing town and judging by the boats on the beach, still harvests a good catch for the locals. We didn't do much here besides take in the beauty and stroll the streets. For those looking to get away from the hustle-bustle, this is it. It midly caters to tourists (once again with the Dali fame), but in a most subtle way.

Figueres: Highly Recommended (for Dali fans only)

Cadaques: Recommended for those daring to leave the big cities.

This painting of Dali's wife was one of many that obviously displayed his classical training and talent, as well as his love of breasts (a theme throughout the museum).

More Dali locations
A few miles from Cadaques is Dali's home/studio, open to the public, and well worth a visit also. It's at Port Lligat - you'll need a reasonable road map to find it.
