Germany has to be the land of fests or festivals as almost every weekend there is some type of celebration going on in one of its numerous villages. This past weekend (July 30 -31) the village of Aub held a different type of fest, a medieval faire. Rather than have a typical festival with carnival rides and a beer fest hall, Aub holds its annual medieval faire. They try to make it as real as possible, with many of the villagers dressing up in costumes of the period. All the various booths maintain this theme and also all of the games (ax throwing and crossbow shooting). The food booths also attempt to maintain this theme with various foods of the medieval period, some of which I have never seen before. One of which looked like a pizza but the crust was extremely thin and topped with pieces of meat and vegetables, but no sauce. The faire area also displays typical living conditions for the period with people in costumes going on with their lives as if the many spectators were not present. The highlight of the faire is the jousting competition and they play it up big with both an evil

and ugly knight and of course, the good and handsome knight. I don’t want to spoil it for you if you ever make it to one of Aub’s faires but I think you know who finally wins the competition.

The beautiful building on the right was built in the early 1600's. It is a typical early German fachwerk (Half-timbering)construction; where the outside structure is composed of beams and a loam filling (clay, sand, and straw) with a covering of a paint mixture made of lime, linseed oil and milk curd.

Trying on medieval garb in western Europe
Hi Paul and Kate, I stumbled across your excellent travel log and was impressed by the detail and fine pictures! I am about to visit Germany and England in a few weeks, for a few weeks each (aug-oct 2010), and am dying to have the experience of being able to try on some armor and weapons - and take some pictures! I have scoured the net for days and can't finquestd what I'm after. I am hoping of stumbling across a place where i can try a few things on whilst visiting castles and medieval towns, but thought i'd ask you if you have any suggestions to help me in my quest! :) thanks, any advice much appreciated! matt dukearithon@hotmail.com
