Baz the Bear
and a certified Maple Leaf Maniac! I hardly unpacked last night, but since Baz is so huge, there was a little bit of drama fitting him back into the luggage. He must have helped himself to some pumpkin squash while everyone was sleeping!
Phil thought about calling in to work sick or just showing up whenever he wanted to. He has been working some crazy hours getting the new Home Depot store in town ready for their opening day and he hasn’t even been sleeping properly. He drives Kryssie and myself down to the airport and we hang around for a bit until we see Kryssie’s mom, Jade as well as a family friend show up. I don’t mind waiting around at the airport for another two hours while I wait for my plane back to Toronto, but the four girls all convince me that I need some company and they take me to Tim Horton’s for a nice hot coffee to wake me up.
Tim Horton’s is the Canadian equivalent of Starbucks; only one wouldn’t necessarily feel guilty buying a coffee at Tim Horton’s compared to Starbucks. Tim Horton was a former hockey player and now his legacy lives on in the many
stores that carry his name selling hot coffee, donuts and hot chilli soup with bread. Mmmm! We stay here and chat for a bit while I notice lots of Canadian Military personnel come in to grab coffee as well. It turns out that Canada’s largest military base is situated just out of town. The town was very busy when Canada started sending troops over to Afghanistan and still is with a lot of troop movements back and forth.
There’s a gas station that we stop over at to see if I can pick up any souvenirs to remember my visit to Fredericton. There aren’t any Mickey Mouse watches here at the gas station nor is there anything else that I really want to look at, but the girls are having fun with a crazy cow toy that goes absolutely mental when you squeeze it tight. I don’t think this would be a good idea to take on the plane for it might freak a lot of people out!
I am dropped off at the airport and Kryssie’s mom already wants to know when I am coming back to Canada. I think the next time I do come here;
it will be for a week in the summer time. At least there are a lot more things open and I can do a lot more. I have to tell you, Readers, that one night was not enough.
After an uneventful plane ride back to Toronto, it’s now off to Sarnia. There’s a bit of time between my plane landing in Toronto and the train leaving, so I kill time by making a phone call to Paula, Aine and Lesley. These girls put the booty in Canadian Booty! Sadly though, I won’t be able to see them on this trip because of the lack of time (and planning!). Paula is so sweet, we chat for nearly half an hour and although we are so close, it feels like I’m calling her from home. She went to Sarnia for Thanksgiving and it would have been a marvellous opportunity to catch up with her but she does give me some small comfort in the fact that Lesley will be coming to Australia two weeks after I get back! It’s not so bad after all.
There’s still a bit more time before the train leaves at 5pm so I walk around
the streets surrounding the station, and it was probably at this moment that my heart melted for Toronto. I had not fallen for a city ever since the first time I went to Brisbane in 2003. The streets are so calm, the architecture is so homelike, and there are so many different cultures that provide layers for this fine city. There are districts for the Greek, the Indians, the Portuguese, the Chinese, the French, and the list goes on. The United Nations should move its headquarters over here. If they don’t then I will end up moving here. The next time I would be here in Toronto would only be on Saturday when I pass through on my way back to San Francisco, but I pondered whether passing through is enough as I sat on the train going west to Sarnia. I might have to make some more changes.
It was nearly 10pm when the train reached Sarnia. Passengers were scattered all over the train as a majority of people got off at London. I spot Tash and Spencer waiting for me. Tasha has been an online friend for a long time, and she has put up with the
inconvenience of my false promises of visits all these years. She finally has the chance to beat the hell out of me since she towers over me, however she gives me a hug that only old friends give and it’s also a pleasure to meet her new boyfriend, Spencer.
Back at their flat is their friend Caelis, who has been staying here with Tash while he gets himself sorted out with a proper place to stay. He has been living it up on the couch for the past few weeks but you would too as they have an awesome rear projection TV that their other flatmate Rachael has brought in. This place really is fit for a king!
Tash knows that I have a fixation over Lindsay Lohan, so we all settle down after dinner to
Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. After the movie is over, I am still buzzing to the fact that I’ve come this far and I’ve now met Tash and her friends. I start to think about going home for a bit, but of course I don’t want to get on that plane to go home. Not just yet.
