Nottingham

Nottingham
Ariana and Lachlan
We have finally found a place to settle in the East Midlands city of Nottingham (pronounced Not-ing-um by locals ). Our apartment is close to the train station, which makes for an easy commute for Lachlan. There is a great tram and bus network nearby so we’re loving jumping on and off the light rail checking out the local shopping, restaurants and pubs and generally wandering around getting a feel for this exciting city.

The region is famous for Sherwood Forrest- home of Robin Hood and his merry men with numerous monuments and streets named after him and his band. Nottingham is also well known for its fabulous shopping (4th best in the UK), and nightlife!

Nottingham city centre is fantastic! All the shops you’d expect from a city this size and all within 15 mins walk of our apartment! To the southwest of the city is a canal with some pubs and restaurants on it. At the other edge of the city (only 15 mins walk - or about 3 mins on the tram) is a really nice old theatre and across the road is a cinema (and more bars, pubs, restaurants - of course).

We visited Nottingham Castle to check out the St Georges Day festivities on the weekend and were thoroughly entertained by medieval displays and knight jousting re-enactments! At the base of the castle we entered ‘Ye Olde Tripe to Jerusalem’, not a religious tour but a pub dating back to 1189! It has been carved out of the side of the cliff and as we sat and sipped our ales we got an overwhelming sense of the past.

Nottingham has been known as the ‘city of caves’ as there are a series of caves below the city which we also investigated last weekend. We got to see a medieval tannery, bomb shelter and the slums of Victorian England, all beneath a Westfield Shopping Centre- ha!

The whole country seems to be coming to life right now. The flowers are blooming, the leaves are returning to the trees and the days are getting noticeably longer and (not quite as noticeably) warmer.

This also means it’s the perfect time for travelling. Here’s hoping we will be able to make our first trip to Europe before too long!!
