Next stop after Arequipa was Cuzco, where we knew we would spend lots of our time and money! The city itself is interesting with Inca streets and colonial buildings but very touristy as you would expect.
We didn't manage to get on the conventional Inca Trail to Machu Picchu as it was booked up, so instead we did a 4 day biking and jungle trek tour. This was a great alternative and much cheaper than the crowded Inca Trail. On the 4th day we walked up to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes, for the sunrise. We were lucky to get a clear, sunny morning for the obligatory photos. After the guided tour we walked up Huayna Picchu, a hill behind the complex. The steep, hot climb was worth it for the different perspective it gave of the ruins.
