Sunday we got up & walked to the bus station to get the bus to the airport & got our flight to Miri, we got a bus into Miri & checked into a place listed in the Lonely Planet, it wasn't very nice but still we had air con & a TV! We went out for dinner & everywhere was closed, we managed to find a shopping mall where we grabbed some food in the supermarket & headed home to watch TV.
On Monday, (after a terrible nights sleep), we went to the Visitors information Centre to find out about diving, trips to the National Parks, (Niah Caves & Lambir Hills) & buses to Brunei. We had a bit of a lie in so decided to spend Monday around Miri Centre; we walked to the Waterfront which wasn't even a waterfront, just a car park, we went to a Temple which wasn't very attractive & we didn't even take a photo! We had lunch at Ming's Place& spent the afternoon on the internet, (still unable to put the photos onto our blogs which has ended up in a massive delay of about a month in publishing everything!) We went
back to the Inn, watched TV & headed out later for dinner, (some pasta which I have missed!) then watched more TV.
On Tuesday we got up & walked to the bus station, three people told us three different buses we needed to get to Lambir Hills National Park but some how we found the right bus to take us to another bus terminal & swop onto a bus that stopped outside the park. We arrived at 9.45am & walked past two small waterfalls & then to a bigger one, Latak Waterfall, where we were able to swim, we had the little lagoon all to ourselves. We walked along another trail, past the Tree Tower to Nimbong Waterfall, (it wasn't big enough to swim in). We continued walking & went for a dip in Pantu Waterfall where something nibbled on one of my big toes, as you can imagine I was out of there pretty sharpish! We had lunch there, (a little picnic) & took some photos before heading on. It rained most of the day but that was nice as it was a lot cooler, especially when we are trekking up & down hills, but we were soaked
when we got back to Park HQ & grabbed a drink before getting the bus back to Miri Centre.
We had hot showers when we got back & a little afternoon nap, (every night the locals insist on having Kareoke right outside our window which goes on until 2am & at one point sounded like a cat being tortured & then like a funeral!) We went on the internet & had dinner at Ming's Place again, (it was really cheap & the Spaghetti Bolognese was lovely!) We went to the supermarket & got some stuff for breakfast & lunch for a picnic to take with us the following day to Niah Caves.
On Wednesday we got up at 8.30am & were out & waiting for the bus by 9.25am. We finally managed to get a decent nights sleep after having a valium, (good bless Laos & its sleeping tablets!) We got on the express bus & I was still sleepy so I slept all the way to the Caves, we got off the bus at 12.35pm & got a taxi to the National Park HQ about 11km's away. We checked in, registered again with our fake student ID
cards which we got on Khao San Road in Bangkok, (mine says I went to Cambridge University - brilliant!) We headed straight out & as there was maintenance work & diversions along the wooden walkways our route was slightly longer than normal but we had a nice walk just over 3km's to the entrance of the Great Cave through the cave, (with the bats), in the pitch black with a torch & another 3 km's onto the Painted Cave. We had a late lunch at the painted cave, took some photos & then headed back, 12.4 kms, it was a really nice afternoon. The Great Cave was massive, I could see why it was one of the biggest in the world. We had a shower when we got back, dinner at the park cafe & headed back to our room for a few games of cards.
On Thursday we got up & had breakfast & got a taxi to the bus stop in Batu Niah & headed back to Miri Centre. We went back to the Inn we had stayed in before, (it did have air con & a TV after all!) & didn't really do a lot else
as we didn't get back to Miri until 3pm. We went for a coffee & used the internet, we didn't have any dinner as we'd had a cake with our coffee & were full from that, (yes I do always talk about food I know but can I just add that I didn't drink any alcohol for about 4 days whilst in Miri!) We had a long lie in on Friday & got up at 1.30pm after playing cards, watching TV & having breakfast in bed. We had a late lunch & found another shopping mall to have a look around, went to the post office & used the internet. (I think we'd exhausted things to do in Miri), we didn't have dinner as we had a late lunch.
On Saturday we got up at 6am & got four buses & a boat to get us back to Brunei. We found a hotel for the night, had lunch, used the internet & had a coffee. We watched TV & went out for dinner. There was a massive thunder storm & really heavy rain, fortunately we missed it from the comfort of Pizza Hut. In the evening we just watched TV & packed.
I thought I might not sleep with the excitement of seeing Mom, Dad, Uncle John & Nikki but I surprisingly slept ok. We got a free transfer from the hotel to the airport & got our flight back to Singapore. We had a coffee at the airport & decided to us the roof top pool in the other terminal, it was really nice & there was a jacuzzi too. We then boarded our flight for Perth & I got a bit excited & emotional & cried at a soppy romance film & drank as much white wine as the air hostess would allow to calm me down. I had been looking forward to Oz for so long & now the time had come to see my parents & Uncle John, Nikki & Amy.
