Cairns is a very nice town with plenty to do in it. I flew in here from Alice Springs with Miriam from heidelberg germany who was on the Uluru trip with me and coincidently the same flight to Cairns. She met up with her mate Jamie from the usa and we hung around for a few days.
We did a tour of the rainforest up there and it was a cool day out. The bus driver had us playing all sorts of games and he spoke alot not about but TO his bus and the bus mascot Elliot from sesame street. It was a bit wierd at first but by the end of the day he had us all chatting to the bus and the stuffed teddy....was a good laugh and we saw some cool landscape on the day.
After that i had booked a 3 day scuba trip out on the great barrier reef. I was dead excited about this as it was something i always wanted to do. So up at crazy o clock in the morning to catch the boat and as i stepped of the bus who was stnding there waiting on the same boat but Frank
turtle
from holland, who partied in Laos (check the Laos blogs) with us for 3 weeks. Well it was fecking great to see him and we spent the next 3 days catching up with eachother stories.
The boat was quite large with a big kitchen area and excellent dive equipment. The food on the boat was really top class with excellent meals waiting for us after every dive and cake in the evening. It really was top notch stuff and definately worth the money!!!Coz we were both advanced divers we also went diving as dive buddies as the certified divers didnt need guides or instructors. There was a good mix of students and experienced divers on the boat and 22 people in total if i remember.....or was it 32??? Not sure. Anyway. The trip out to the reef was really really rough and all the confident people who didnt take the motion sickness tablets coz "they had done it all before" all got sick overboard(i took the tables just to be sure but was still feeling rough until we arrived at the reef). Well i just couldnt wait to get into the water and after a quick dive breef on
where
howdy
to go and what to look out for we were off. I have to say the diving was just amazing. There were just 1000s of species of fish everywhere, some huge turtles and lots of reef Sharks. We had 4 dives on the first day which takes alot out of you spending so much time at depth under water. That night we were all in bed by 9pm. The second day was the same with 4 dives at different parts of the reef. The night dive on the 2nd night was really cool. At the back of the boat there were about 8 to 10 sharks all swimming around feeding off the fish attracted but the boats lights. It was so exciting and i made sure i was first to jump off the back of the boat in on top of the sharks. The buzz you get from watching the sharks swim around you is unexplainable you just have to try it yourself!!!Also on the 2nd eveing we were all treated to the most spectacular sunset in have ever seen. The sky just turned this crazy blood red, bright firey yellows and blues...it was a mental sky that
night!!!

the third day there were a further 3 dives but i couldnt complete the latst dive as i was in serious pain from a "squeeze" (which is an air pocket where the air cant escape) above one of my tooth fillings. This lasted for about an hour so i decided not to risk the last dive incase it popped the filling or tooth out which happens to allot of divers. Still i had a wonderful time and it was one of the highlights of my trip so far.
I said goodbye to Frank and agreed to go for more pints (the amount of pints i have to go for when i get home with everyone i have met is nearly as much as im having now!!!) in holland or back home when i return.
Cairns itself has plenty of bars and a great nightlife. It also has a huge lagoon which is basically a huge outdoor public pool with sand and all to resemble a beach. They have this because you cant go swimming in the sea along the coast up there due to the deadly box jelly fish. I spent a week in Cairns
and it was a really
Cairns Lagoon
cool place to chill, have fun, explore and party......what more do you want!!! :o)
