If you've ever traveled before, you know what I mean when I say you get familiar with the way cities and towns are set up in the country you are in. Every shop you go into looks the same as the last, every street looks like one you walked down in days past. Smells are familiar, people you meet are quickly forgotten, and the food all tastes the same. The initial newness and excitement of your surroundings begin to fade, right around the stage I am at right now--the two week point.

This is the point the traveler must break free from their rut and decide what their next move is, and quick. Which is why I'm on my way to Laos via a river boat that will take two days to get to the World Heritage city of Luang Phabang.

My only mistake is that I went the lazy route and booked the entire trip from my guesthouse, which meant I am on the well-worn tourist trail. I don't get to decide which boat to venture out on, which guesthouse to stay in, even my dinner tonight is at the prearranged time of 7:30. The trip to Chiang Khong was in a crowded minivan rather than a bus filled with genuine Thai people, trading the half-understood conversation I may have had with a local for the stuffy quiet ride with Westerners busy staring out the window listening to their iPods. But it wasn't all bad, I downloaded the latest Daily Show and watched that before I drank a cold Chang Beer with the Irish guy sitting next to me.

Now I sit here being anti-social insulting the situation I got myself into, and I can smell the dinner I will be eating before I have time to read this and make some last minute edits. Well I'm afraid it's hitting the press as is, cuz I just heard "Dinner ready".

Hmm, Phad Thai again?

Just wait'll you get home
The phrase, "every street looks like one you walked down in days past" will never be so meaningful as when you're back on State Street. Sedro is way lamer than Thailand. Peace-
