This is a photo of the "good" road gone bad!
You can see that there is a part of the road missing from washout. Look to the right and that is where the traffic is "diverted" down a STEEP grade and up another one! I am not really sure WHY we decided to venture out again after a day of bad roads yesterday. BUT, we HEARD from folks who have taken this trip just a bit north of los Barriles to these two villages on the water that the roads were NOT that bad. Yes, some bad spots along the way but no problem in the truck. Plus, it is only about 20 miles or so. AND......"it is so worth it". We got up early and headed out and took the first bad road and figured that we HAD to be on the wrong road after about 20 minutes of bouncing and giving the shocks a good work out. So we went back up to the "new" road which was a two lane highway. We climbed and climbed and saw some wonderful vistas on this roller coaster ride! Then the "good" road turned into a perilous causeway with big drop offs on either side, often closing down to one lane with washed out areas of the road!! I thought for sure we would fall off! At one point in the road we had to turn off the highway and take this "side" road down a
The "diverted" lane for traffic
Here is the road we took to get to the other side of the washout. steep hill and then back up and hope that no one else was coming the other way since it was ONLY one lane!!!! We didn't think that that road would EVER end. I am not sure that the photos that I put up here will do the justice that they deserve in showing just how dangerous these roads are. We vowed that we would NOT take this road back and deal with the "old" road.
We ended up in Cardonal which has some great rocky beaches and is very beautiful. There is not much there other than a little restaurant and a hotel. We were starving for lunch but the gal that serves and cooks was pulling double duty as maid at the hotel so we would have to wait for her to return. The person who was maybe serving as the "host/hostess" we think was male but obviously wanted to be female with his mannerisms and his nails painted ruby red!! He really did look like a chica! Anyway, we decided to forego the restaurant and rocky beach and head back towards Pescadero on the "other old" road so we would not have to go over those washed
out roads. This road was one lane in many parts and it ran along the ocean--no side rails at all and one mistake and you are in the water!!! There were curves too so I made Mike honk the horn all the way around the curves because who knew if something else was coming. Not to mention the random cattle that roam freely. So we plugged along the crappy old roads at about 10 mph for some 15 miles! We stopped about halfway at Punta Pescadero for lunch and to enjoy the vistas from the deck.
Lunch was wonderful and the views priceless.
There is one other place that we have been advised to see and that is where Mike's friend, Baja Steve, is in Cabo Pulmo. Our backs canNOT take another ride like that so we hope when we return next time, we will see Cabo Pulmo. I have seen some sights that I have never seen before here on this adventure. But worth it by land? Not sure on that one..... There actually is an air strip in Pecadero and we vowed that we would only return by boat or by air!
The Baja Peninsula is
desolate, gorgeous, and wonderful but the roads here are BAD! Much of it is due to the hurricane last fall and I do not see how they can fix them and expect them to withstand the water and the erosion! I guess they just like to keep people employed????
