Mostar

Mostar was mind-boggling.
One of the main mind-screwing things was that the door to our apartment was bullet-ridden.

But that stood out massively/paled in comparison to all the bullet holes... everywhere. And mortar marks. oh yes and gutted, destroyed buildings with no rooves and only one whole wall - that was the one shared by a bright pink, modern, immaculate, apartment block.

The people were friendly though, and the food was excellent, and very cheap, cheaper than you can eat in nz!

have you really been in the city?
Well, i live in Mostar and i never heard about mines in the city! Maybe there are mines somewhere in the mountens but why to go there anyway!? you saw only destroyed buildings? Have you saw new shopping centers, the old city? have you went to see the west side of the city? about your accomodation - we have 4 great hotels ranked with 3,4 and 5 stars and awarded from european hotel's association! there is also many private rooms and apartments! It was your decision to rent that room, that was probably the cheapest one! we also have great terases, cafe bars, restaurants, night life! I'm really sory if you missed all that when you were here! But - you have a reason to come back! Welcome!

thats not quite what i meant...
the point of that blog was the contrast to the sheltered world i grew up in, where actually im not even sure if ive seen a real gun before. I was only in mostar one day, so no, i did not do it justice (sounding like a broken record with that one, didnt have enough time anywhere i went!). The apartment I stayed in was probably one of the nicest in all my travels, but again, the bullet holes in the door were a novelty for me, and that is why i commented so much on all the destruction, because that was the thing that stood out the most, in fact it was quite overwhelming - i didn't know quite what to think, its not a city you can find anywhere. The old city was beautiful, and the river, the food and drink and service was very good, also cheap, and we also found a pool table, one of only two in all my travels. So I apologise if it all sounded a little blase. You might be interested to know that i have been telling everyone back home that of all the places i went in europe bosnia was my favourite, and that i would love to go back and really get to know it, and not only because of its recent history. the people i met there were friendly and interesting, and i would have loved to have stayed longer.
