So from BA we crossed the rio Plata on a slow boat and moved our clocks forwards an hour in the process to reach Colonia, the starting point for our Uruguay visit. Firstly what a diference 3 hours makes! Being such a small country we wondered if it would not have a vastly different feel to the surrounding Argentina, but we were hoping that it would and were not dissapointed. Uruguay is an easy to travel in, fun and developed South American country which has managed to retain the laid back South American vibe!

We have spent 10 days at the beach at La Paloma, to try to top up our tans so they are better than Stacey´s mums before we meet up in New Zealand, 5 days in Colonia, the oldest colonial town, founded by portuguese settlers from Brazil in 1680, soaking up the old world atmosphere and enjoying the good food and finally several days in Salto, where we visited Thermal baths and boiled off our grime and top layer of tan in a scauldingly hot pool... or was it dirt all along?

Uruguay does not have any outstanding Iguacu´s or Torres but it has a great atmosphere, the freindliest people we have met for a long time and also some fantastic beaches and towns. Uruguay is best summed up for us by one of our meals out: We had drunk a bottle of wine and decided that heading back to the hotel might be a plan. We went to pay with the only note we had - a typically silly note as that is always what the cashpoints dish out... The owner turned round to us and said ¨I haven´t got any change at the moment but don´t worry about it... just come back sometime when you have change and it will be fine... Relax you are not in Argentina anymore... Uruguayans trust!¨ That was the nicest thing we have been told in a while so decided that another bottle was in order - one great night and one memory which captures Uruguay for us.
