So after a few days in Samui Micheal and myself headed back to the mainland and towards Phuket. After a mad bus journey which involved the bus driver dropping us off in Surat Tani telling us we would be picked up by another bus. He never told anyone we were going to Phuket and after an hour of waiting around i asked someone at the bus stop when was the bus to Phuket and she just stared at me blankly. After some phone calls we had to dash accross town to catch a different bus to Phuket.......you gotta love the system here, if you dont look after yourself youll just be forgotten about and stranded somewhere!
Anyway we arrived at a very cheap "Hotel On On" with very large comfortable rooms. For a few days before this Micheal had been slagging me how i had never seen the movie "The Beach" coz in Phi Phi thats where they made it. I was reminded about this roughly every five minutes for 2 weeks i reckon !!! When we were throwing our bags into our rooms Micheal says it looked identical to the hotel where the beach was made too......it turns out he was right and we stayed down the hall from where it was made......the thrill of it all eh!!??
Anyway Phuket town was quiet and had a few bars mainly full of locals which was nice for a change as there were not too many foreigners(farang) at all. It was a nice town.
On the second day and night we went to Patong beach to see what all the fuss was about as they say this is the main tourist spot in Thailand. Since phuket town 5 miles away was very quiet we didnt expect much but Patong beach was absolute madness!!! There were hundreds of thousands of people here! The 2 or 3 km beach was absolutely thronged......with maybe 50% or more of the people over the age of 55. It was really hectic. That night the streets were heaving and the bars packed. It was a little too crazy for us and one night there was enough to be honest with you.
After a few beers a lady came up selling some wooden frogs (you see these ladies in every town where there are tourists trying to sell theses things and you hear them long before you see them), for some reason(eh the beer) i decided to buy one after saying no about 20 times before in different cities. Micheal bought one too. Because of the alcohol there was a good chance we might forget them later so we both stressed to pay particular attention to the frogs and not forget them ........... we walked off without them literally 60 seconds later!!!! (sigh)
