We've been everywhere man. We are finding our way around this city of 14 million, or we eventually find our way. We went by subway to Palermo, a neighbourhood of flash apartments, shops, we haven't bought much because we're a bit nervous about going into shops and showing off our ignorance. We've been to 'Plaza del Congreso' that has the congress building and the park has a fenced off area for dogs. I thought it was a Doggy Day Care, but it is an area that the dog walkers let the dogs off for a bit of a run around and then a bit of a play before going for another walk. There is all sorts of dogs here, I have seen a beautiful red setter, poodles, and breeds never seen before. They are all well behaved and well loved. The dog walkers have about 6 big dogs at a time, all under excellent control and the dogs love it. There is alot of shit everywhere though.
Wednesday 7th Went to a free concert in the Plaza del mayo, I would call it Spanish rock, very nice and pleasant to be out in the evening. amongst the local people. I
met a young man who had a very strong social awareness and was concerned about Argentina and its poor people. He says only 40% of the locals have a comfortable standard of living, the rest are very poor. We have seen people begging and asleep on the street.
Thursday 8th. We visited the Museo del Cabildo y las Revolucion, an amazing building that has memorabilia of the 1806 British attack with paintings, furniture of the times. We went to Palermao Hollywood to a bar for a meal and finish our Spanish class, I need to do another one because the brain is a bit rusty and information falls out very easily.
Friday 9th Lost in Argentina
Today we tried to go to Tigra to organise a holiday there. I managed to get us on the wrong bus and we ended up along way from where we wanted to go. I asked a lady if we were near our stop and she said we were far, far, far away. We had been sitting on the bus for about 1 1/2 hours, still in the city though. We eventually got on the right bus but had run out of small
change. You need the exact money on the bus and an angel helped us. This holiday has made us very aware how hard it is in a foreign country and that we will help foreign people when we get back home. Anyway we've sorted a couple of places where we may stay, it is cheaper during the week and we will be looking forward to a rest soon.
We went to a Tango musical; 'Tanguera' el musical Argentino. It cost $20 peso each to be in the cheap seats. It was all in Spanish but showed the history of Tango from the time of the immigrants until today. I really enjoyed it and Paul sat patiently. Along from that theatre is an opera of Dracula and Paul thought that maybe interesting to go to. Talk about getting Culture - a little more that our Little Theatre.
Yesterday Saturday 10th Misplaced in Argentina. We tried to get to the Recolleta Crafts Market and Cemetery and we walked to 2 hours the wrong way up a street. We eventually found where we needed to be and visited the cemetery that Mrs Eva Peron is buried in. The cemetery is inside tall
brick walls and is the most expensive real estate in Buenos Aires. It is like a city with roads and avenues and glass windows that you can see the coffins in. The most was 16 coffins inside and they go deep into the ground. We had trouble finding Eva's place of burial, thinking she would be in the main avenue, but she was in her family plot that was very hard to find. The name on her tomb was her family name. I don't know where Mr Peron is. What a place, most amazing.
We went to an art Museum across the road and have seen Rembrant, Manet, Monet, Picaso, et el, paintings and tapestries from 1500's - until today, bronzes, marble statues, etc. We are cultured out.
We saw the big metal sculpture of a flower, 10 metres high that opens at dawn and closes at dusk with a red glow showing at night.
We did 36,000 steps today and really nearly did ourselves in.
Today, resting in San Telmo. I have organised an art class that may help me get some art done while here. We're not quite sure what we are doing, will up date you
later.
