All of us
13 out of 17 of us anyways Chrissy in the snow, what an awesome idea, It was to be our first White Christmas. A few months before Christmas we all decided to go to the snow in France. No one had a clue what to expect but with the crew that were going we kinda had a suspicion that we would go hell for leather the whole trip in everything we did, be it snowboarding, drinking, snowboarding or drinking!!!
The drive there in the Red Bullet was very long. The seven of us, Dave, Kerrie, Casey, Nese, Fieldsy, Mel & Grant, left London and hit the road in the night, full to the brim with all of our gear, and headed to Dover to catch the Ferry. We were very lucky the whole way there as there was no traffic, just a shitload of fog. At times, almost impossible to see what was in front of you. Dave slept nearly the whole way there, and so did everyone else for that matter. Except for the driver and Nese, who stayed awake the whole 14 hours to give directions!!! As we continued our journey we could slowly feel it getting colder outside. I think the ice on the
windows was the dead give away!!! We were getting closer to the snow. YAY!!! Our first sight of snow was about half hour from Chamonix and us girls went ballistic in the car. Once in Chamonix we called Glen, the guy who runs the chalet we had booked, to come and help us get there. The Chalet was awesome. Wooden outside and in and all the creature comforts the seven of us needed, and, the best shower pressure anyone could wish for. Something you just dont get in shitty ol' London. We got settled in our chalets and rested up and waited for the other half of Rockingham to arrive in France. The first group was Wendy, Rina, Scott, Jess and Jamie. Later that day Gordo, Kenno and Pete arrived. the lads had missed their flight, can you believe, because they were sitting in the bar for to long and kind of weren't paying attention to the time hahaha. Then the following day Erin and Lindsay arrived.
Our first day in the snow was the most painful ever. Kerrie, Nese and I went to the beginners slope which was pretty much solid ice. There hadn't been a dump of
snow for a couple weeks, and it didnt snow the whole time we were there either. I started to get the hang of it, of course, but poor ol' Kez fell on her arse so many times that the tailbone couldnt take it anymore and she just about passed out. It was off to the sin bin for her for the rest of the day, and pretty much the trip!! We then decided to F**k the beginners slope off and head up to the top of the mountain to meet the rest of the gang. After lunch Dave grew some balls and headed up to the Blue runs, ARGH!!!! He made it down nice and safe and Kerrie and Nese watched on as they nursed there injuries for the last half of the day!! This day being Christmas Eve we all stayed up late drinking to the wee hours before we retired to bed to rest before another day on the slopes.
Christmas Day was a little different to the hot weather of Oz and the family get togethers. Although, we did the traditional Champagne Breakfast that went down a treat. We all did our thing on the slopes,
Kerrie and Nese still shit at snowboarding, then sat and enjoyed the lovely sun in the below zero temperatures!!! That night, Casey had booked for us to go and enjoy a Christmas dinner at the Micro Brewery, a Canadian Pub. After an amazing 3 course dinner the lads made friends with one of the guys behind the bar, who ended up being the owner, and he treated us to a lot of freebies. Lovely!! An enjoyable night that ended with 3 of the lads getting into a tussle with a French guy over Hamburgers. The first of many fights we would be involved in with lovely French people.
Boxing Day involved more Boarding and then our first Ice Hockey game. Chamonix were playing in their home town so there were heaps of people there. We froze and drank beer and were probably some of the loudest people in the place. No Surprises there. Kenno finished the evening by making friends with the MC who let him slide across the ice on his belly for a while!! On the way home it was the return to the fight club where once again there was a fight at a burger joint.
This time Dave and Fieldsy got into a tussle with a French dude that luckily, didnt go to far.
So over the next few days we did loads of boarding/skiing. Well for everyone but Kerrie and Nese who happily gave up on the boarding to enjoy the sites of the mountains and the restaurants. Our nights involved more drinking and another visit to Fight Club. Although, this one involved an english guy who was a complete wanker!! There was also a night at the local Casino where Dave and Wendy walked away with a nice win. Unlike everyone else!
We all headed up on one of our final days to Aguille Du Midi. We went to nearly the hightest peak in the Alps, 3842m. Some of us felt the effects of being at such a high altitude and were getting a little bit light headed. After an hour of freezing our arses off at god knows what temperature we headed down the mountain to return to the Chalet.
Our time in Chamonix was drawing to an end and so we packed up our mountain of gear and piled back in to the Red Bullet!!! This trip home was
not as cruisy as the trip over. it was very windy and wet on the roads and as we drove closer to Calais, Fieldsy had a feeling that the Ferries would have been cancelled due to some extremely strong winds. So we made it to Calais in reasonably good time but were dealt with a blow, the ferries were cancelled and the next one was about 3 hours away. So all we could do for the time being was sit in the car and get rocked around the place by the gale force winds. So after our 18 hour trip home we finally got to our beds back in London to rest up before we went out again for New Years Eve. Oh, its a hard life!!!
