The youth hostel that I have spent most time in so far, there is a kitchen/ TV room down the hall. Mines the top right bed
I have been here for nearly a week now slumming it up in the local youth hostels. They are pretty good actually, much better than I was expecting (at least for 8 squid a night anyway).
I thought at first that I'd try and stay in a different hostel every night to find the best one. That flopped and after swapping hostels after the first day, I found one that I like and so have been there since. It is right on the promenade in Cairns just across the road from the sea and the harbour is around the corner. There is a lagoon in front of the youth hostel thats just a big free swimming pool that everyone goes to. I have spent a lot of time there doing the strenuous activity of sunbathing and swimming. Its really hot here all the time so its a good job that everywhere is airconditioned. I have never seen/ spoken to so many different nationalities in my life. So far I have shared a room with an English/Aussie/American/French/Holland/Tasmanian/Swedish/Chinese and a few Germans and am now fluent in all their languages.
On the saturday I was walking through town and got asked if I

One night the sun decided to mix things up a bit and set sideways- it was strange
wanted to go on this organsied bar crawl (18-30s style). I went and it was top notch, we got free food when we arrived and all the lads got a bolt and all the girls got a nut. There was one each that fit and you had to try and find a match to win a prize... it was a good way to meet everyone and we were told to use the saying 'fancy a screw', I thought that was a bit lame so just asked them if they had a pair of nuts... went down a treat. I was thinking that I was gonna end up matching some massive fatty, but it was ok and ended up with someone nice.... never found one that fit but gave up anyway. We went to about five different clubs/ bars and because there was a lot of us we went to each one in an open top bus where everyone was waving... felt like a VIP. The only thing was I ended up sat next to this english guy that thought it would be funny to stick a nazi salute out of the window and used his finger to give himself a tashe... quite amusing.
It was a good night anyway even though I spent a load of cash. The only other thing I did was going to the pictures and watching a film about dragons... not great.

Anyway Tim arrives tomorrow so I might have to show him the local sights via every pub in town. Going to sunbathe now.
