Starting Point... UshuaiaStarting Point... UshuaiaStarting Point... Ushuaia

Unloading off the plane and looking around our starting point... the southern-most city in the world
It´s hard to get too excited about Ushuia when you read about it in the guide books. ¨A place to go just so you can say you have been to the southernmost city in the world.´´ or ¨´the gateway to Antartica¨ Oh, but the contrary!
Thanks to the boys we had a wonderful campsite out of town (El fin del Faro del Playa Larga) in the greenest of greens underneath the gnarledest of trees on the side of the ocean, seeming as if to sail out would be sure proof that the world is indeed flat!
The first day we were there as a group we (elise and emma) were led around the area surrounding the campsite by the boys ( who had been there for 3 days). We followed a river to the ocean, climbed cliffs, waved to tour boats who snapped pictures of un on the rocky and picturesque shore, and did the general oooohing and ahhhing at the scenery.
The next day we went to Tierra del Fuego national park loaded with picnic supplies and followed a wonderful hike overlooking the Bay of Beagle into Chile. We seemed to have the park to ourselves!

Making Ushuaia home for the next week
dark down there until after 10pm we lost track of time and payed quite a pricey taxi ride (we missed the bus) back towards our campsite on the opposite end of town. Since our bus was leaving at 6:30 am the next day we all climbed into the tents and called it a night.
Our first big adventure of the trip began when the taxi that was supposed to come and get us at 5:45 didn´t show up. You have to understand that we were in complete seclusion and could not hail a taxi or any car, nothing..... 5:50, 5:55....no taxi and 10 minutes until we need to be at the bus station. If we didn´t make this bus then we were not going to be able to leave for 5 more days because of the overbooked buses! Emma takes off running down the 2 mile dirt road to try and flag down a ride on the next paved road. By 6:45 we were all in a taxi chasing the bus through the mountains while the bus driver was laughing hysterically at our desperation!!! Thirty minutes later we see the bus and flag it down!!!! 16 hours later we are in Calafate!
