Miguel really wanted to tick off Wales on his country list and so we decided to include a visit to the capital with an overnight stay so that our trip wasn't too rushed, particularly with having Jovie with us, who is only 2 months old. It would be possible to do a day trip to Cardiff from where we live as it would be just over a 2 hour drive. We planned our itinerary well so that on the way to Wales we could stop off and spend some time in the beautiful Roman city known as Bath.
For anyone unfamiliar with the city called Bath, it is famous for its Roman bath that you can still visit today. The city is beautiful with Georgian architecture. I've visited many times recently and never get bored of seeing the city. We park a little way from the city, as I know somewhere to park for free on a Sunday (Parking in the centre is quite expensive). From where we park, we can enjoy a nice stroll along the
River Avon as we get closer to the city centre.
As we have arrived in Bath late morning, we suggest to Miguel
he queues up to visit
The Roman Bath, as this bath attracts a lot of visitors and gets very busy. Fiona and I decide to get tea and cake from a nearby Patisserie Valerie as we've both visited the Roman bath recently.
After an hour and a half, Miguel shows up and so we give him a tour of the city showing the main highlights;
Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge,
The Circus and
The Royal Crescent. I won't talk about Bath too much as previously mentioned it in my blog
Por Por Adventures.
We leave Bath mid-afternoon and head for Cardiff, the capital of Wales. We encounter quite a bit of traffic coming out of Bath and so we reach our hotel in the early evening. Our hotel is situated in
Cardiff Bay, known to be a diverse waterfront due to a great mix of restaurants, bars, entertainment venue and daily boat trips. We venture out to a restaurant for dinner and end up taking Miguel to a westernized Latin American restaurant chain called
Las Iguanas; how very British of us to take an Argentinian here for dinner. Fiona and I are big fans of the food and the alcoholic
cocktails they do at Las Iguanas.
The next day Jovie enjoyed her first night sleeping in a hotel and didn't wake up too often in the night. After breakfast, we take a bit of a walk and head towards the city centre and visit
Cardiff Castle; a medieval castle at the heart of the capital and is one of Wales' leading heritage attractions with over 2,000 years of history. The castle started of in the 1st century AD by the Romans. By the 11th century, the Normans had constructed a keep that still dominates around the castle today. Work began on the house from around the 15th century with the last family leaving their mark in the 19th century, which is how it appears today in a Victorian gothic style. We learn that during World War II the walls which surround the castle were used as air raid shelters; a place of safety for thousands of Cardiff citizens. One of the shelters has been reconstructed for visitors to visit.
We next head over to
Buke Park, the major park of Cardiff. The park comprises of 130 acres of gardens and parkland and was once park of the
castle grounds. We enjoy a leisurely stroll, walking along side the
River Taff. We walk so far before deciding to turn around and head back towards the car which is still parked at the hotel as it is some walk back towards
Cardiff Bay. We find it obligatory to stop off and buy some fresh Welsh Cakes to eat as we head back towards the car.
Our journey back home is a late one; tomorrow Miguel leaves us, but his adventure isn't over just yet as we still have some time for more exploring 😊

Wasting food is a real pet peeve of mine and sadly some parts of the world need these posters (minus the Hitler reference!). I'm now curious about Welsh cakes and need to google it to check if they are normal cakes bought in Wales or a special cake :)
