Tuesday 17th September

Breakfast this morning was quite basic and very drawn out. We went downstairs at eight o'clock and waited a while for the lady to appear. She showed us to the table we had been sat at last. Bit by bit she brought us orange juice, bread, croissants, jams, butter, ham, cheese and a yoghurt each. There was no rushing her and you had no idea when she would appear again or what she would bring. Paul opted for coffee and I had hot chocolate. I knew the coffee would be too strong for me.

As we left we saw the Canadians were eating their breakfast sat outside and there was a young girl waiting on. We must have had breakfast too early for her fo arrive. We were on the road soon after nine o'clock to try to beat some of the heat of the sun. It wasn't long before we had an up and over, taking in a view point looking across the river to the Chateau below. We stopped at Montignac to buy lunch provisions as it looked like the largest place for a while. I spotted a Boulangerie that advertised sandwiches and went in. We had the choice of ham and butter or ham and butter!.

Montignac is famous for the Lascaux Caves with their extensive prehistoric paintings. The area we were cycling through is known as the 'cradle of mankind' as there is much evidence it was inhabited by prehistoric humans.

Lunch was sat on a bench in the shade at Le Moustier. Immediately after lunch we saw the caves at Roque St Christopher. These cliffs have been inhabited since prehistoric times and it is possible to see indentations where beams and windows have been. All along today's route there were signs s for caves to visit. The ones at Roc de Cazelle had inhabitants as late as 1966!

There was lots of long slow climbs today and it was very hot so we were grateful if there was some shade. We spotted a small snake at the side of the road at one point.

Finally, it was downhill into Sarlat-La-Caneda and we easily found the hotel on the main street. After showers and a change of clothes we found a cafe bar and had an ice cream each and then a drink sat outside watching the world go by. Later we went out for food and it was very easy to find some where to eat which makes life easier.
