Leaving Page under beautiful sunny skies, we gassed up the chariot and went through a car wash. Must have had half of Utah on the car. The scenic highway south is frequented with small stands, with local Native Americans selling jewelry and pottery. We made a stop at a place called Cliff Dwellers that was very interesting. While there were not real cliff dwellings, there were some unusual rock formations and a couple of very old stone dwellings. Since there was no descriptions of what they were, we were left to imagine who lived there. We then headed off to the next stop on the journey, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Leaving the prairies we now climbed to much higher ground dominated with Ponderosa pines and birches. It was quite beautiful and very peaceful. Arriving at the rim, we were amazed at the size of the crowds there. Very difficult to find a parking spot. The rim trails were the usual, very narrow and no railings along the looooooong drop offs. The scenery was incredible, although not as spectacular as our previous trip to the south rim. We had our lunch at the Park Lodge restaurant, which was very
lovely, then took off for Bright Angel Point, a viewing area about 11 miles to the east of the North Rim. Breathtaking views. We could see why the locals prefer this area over the North rim for scenery. Our drive today was interesting, as we kept on bouncing back and forth in different time zones. We arrived in Kanab at 4pm. After the perfunctory nap and cocktail hour, we headed to a French restaurant that was recommended by the desk clerk. It was superb, and quite a surprise to find such fine dinning is such a small town. Now on to Vegas.
Our route to Vegas brings us back through Zion NP and the Mt. Carmel highway. As you may recall, we took this highway on our way to Bryce Canyon days ago, although seeing it from a different perspective was enjoyable. Traffic on this trip was extremely heavy. Probably because it's Friday. Hitting Rt 15, a major highway, we made good time to Vegas, arriving at 12:30pm. Our stay here is at the Trump International Hotel. This place is incredible. Our suite's bathroom is larger than any of the hotels we've stayed at on our trip. It has
a kitchen, large living area, huge bedroom and two bathrooms. Dorothy isn't in the woods anymore! Trump certainly made our vacation great again! We headed to the strip to have lunch and see some sites. The heat seemed unbearable, although it was in the low hundreds. I think it's all the pavement. Back at the hotel, we rested awhile and met for our cocktail hour, before heading out to dinner. None of us are gamblers, so I must say that its an interesting place to visit, but not a place I'd be drawn back to. We fly back tomorrow, with many fond memories of this trip. We've seen some truly amazing sights, and have been re-enforced that there is so much to see right here in the good old USA.
