From Leonardo´s house in Guadalupe I hopped on a bus to Pisco, back towards Lima. Near here is the Paracas Reserve, and the Islas Ballestas, which are touted in guidebooks as the ¨poor man´s Galapagos¨.
I got there very early to take a boat. The boat was filled with schoolkids. The ones near me really liked my camera.
The trip was amazing, these two large hunks of rocks way out in the ocean absolutely covered in birds (penguins, pelicans, others) and sea lions. The sea lions make a very scary roaring racket. I was unaware of this; it must be where the name comes from.
I was admiring the color variations in the rock, thinking it´s so interesting how it goes from white to red, when I realized that the white was surely guano. Majestic.
I fell asleep on the boat on the way back, face to the sun. I have the worst sunburn I´ve ever had on my face, which of course is saying something. My lips are blistered.
In the afternoon my very nice tour guide helped me to catch a collectivo to the reserve, which
is this huge peninsula, all sand dunes. I sat by the water, wandered around, and tried to learn some simple wire work from a traveller/jewelry maker guy, Luis, who I was talking to. You can swim there, there are pelicans wandering around, fishing boats in a quiet bay. It was really quite beautiful.
I have to cut this one short, but I really must add that on the radio at the moment is a Spanish language cover of Everything I Do, I Do It For You, by Bryan Adams. And the person singing really sounds like Bryan Adams. I hope that it is. That is all.
