Sunday 30th June 2019 Our journey home on Lufthansa went smoothly, and both flights were on time. The timing of the first flight, however, was not conducive to slumber, so we didn’t try to sleep, just watched movies. We got up at 8 a.m. on Friday, which was 5 p.m. here in Spain. We landed at Alicante airport twenty-four hours later at 5 p.m. yesterday. Needless to say, by the time we did eventuality get to bed here at home last night, we had been up for too many hours, so we didn’t do a lot today!
Although travel is great, it was lovely to get home to our dogs, Mutley and Megan. Nick and Mam have a new little rescue dog called Flor. Actually, we thought that we were going to adopt her, but we are really pleased that they have. Two dogs and a little puppy coupled with jet-lag would have made for a very hard weekend! She is a lovely little girl and she will be spending plenty of time with us anyway. Megan loves her and Mutley is adapting!
We have done our trip summing up and these are the statistics:
Number of Canadian territories: five
Places where we stayed: PORTUGAL: Lisbon
ONTARIO: Toronto, Tobermory, Manitoulin, Sault St Marie, Wawa, White River, Red Rock, Thunder Bay and Quetico
MANITOBA: Falcon Lake, Winnipeg and Riding Mountain
SASKATCHEWAN: Regina, Moose Jaw, Besant, Swift Current and Cypress Hills
ALBERTA: Drumheller, Calgary, Canmore, Banff and Jasper
BRITISH COLUMBIA: Golden, Valemount, Kamloops, Lillooet, Squamish, Parksville, Ucluelet, Brentwood Bay, Victoria and Vancouver
Twenty-nine hotels/motels/guest houses/B&Bs and four campsites We drove 7,250 kilometres all together and it was easy driving. Apart from the spectacular scenery and more trees than we have ever seen in our lives, we saw so many birds, most notably the Bald Eagles and a total of twenty-five wild mammal species:
Black Bear, Grizzly Bear, Moose, Elk, Antelope, White-tailed Deer, Black-tailed Deer, Mule Deer, Racoon, Seal, Sea Lion, Orca, River Otter, Beaver, Fox, Wolf, Bison, Rabbit, Hare, Black Squirrel, Prairie Dog, Chipmunk, Douglas Squirrel, Red Squirrel and Ground Squirrel.
Driving through this vast rich country that is Canada, teaming with life and outstanding natural beauty, has been a joy to the senses and nectar for the soul. One simply can do no more than wonder at the
jaw-dropping richness and lushness of it all. There is no finer education than that found travelling; we have been educated and blessed.
