Here, lovely June is finishing and I felt the need to catch up with my writing. This time, I will be dealing with a new South American destination, and a way of travel I hadn't experienced by myself, that is...backpacking. Had I actually done it before? alone...alone? well...not really, I can't recall more than just booking hotels, but getting my gear and getting away on my own...I gather this was it. And guess what? I visited 2 hemispheres at the same time, that's right...
De nuevo, por aquí tratando de adelantarme en mi atrasada escritura. Esta vez, les estaré compartiendo una experiencia en Sur América que no había tenido antes, mochiliar! Creo que esa es la traducción. Pero dirán, será que lo había hecho antes? a ver, sólo, sólo, no creo. En el recuerdo, tengo la reserva de hoteles pero ya empacando mis cosas y viajando así tan de aventura, no creo. Esta como que fue mi primera vez. Y lo mejor fue que esta experiencia me llevó a 2 hemisferios de una vez, aquí les cuento...
Backpacking? ME...No way...WAIT!!! I must confess that the mere exercise of just thinking about backpacking was
exhausting, it is not as if we had someone to help us cope with uncertainty or at least, to keep us company. In fact, most of the time, we prevent ourselves from doing it due to excuses such as lack of time, money or the thought of not considering the whole travel -this way- as much of a relaxing experience but one that keeps us worried about not being able to adapt ourselves to those potential unknown environments. On the next lines, I will then describe what for me -I hope- will be my first foot on the door when it comes to backpacking.
Les confieso que el sólo pensamiento de que me iba a ir de mochilero fue agotador, no es como si tuviéramos a alguien que nos ayudara a lidiar con la incertidumbre de lo que genera un viaje de este tipo, o que nos honren y desbarran con su compañía. Para ser franco, la mayoría de las veces, estos dos aspectos se convierten en excusas que nos impiden coger vuelo o mejor bien, decimos que nunca tendremos el tiempo o el dinero o simplemente, no lo vemos como una manera relajante de viajar ya que no
nos vemos capaces de adaptarnos al miedito que provoca el estar solos en alguno de esos lugares desconocidos. Así que aquí comienzo a explicarles lo que espero que para mí sea sólo el principio de mucho más backpacking!
What do you say? A package tour or backpacking? Yet, it is true that when you buy a package tour, you will have everything planned and there's not much place for uncertainty, that's for sure, but...is that what we really want when we get to a new place?... Conversely, when you backpack, you are the owner of your time, can go here and there at your own pace and stay at that lovely place that had you get goosebumps or spiritual chills. That for me is unique... On the other hand, as for money matters, it is evident that backpacking is far cheaper, which doesn't mean you will not find the right spots to explore, oh no, there's always the internet to help you do your research beforehand while you drink a lovely Colombian coffee.
Si, es verdad que cuando compras ya un viaje organizado pues todo parece mas simple y no hay tanto lugar
para esa incertidumbre pero, hey, cuando te vas de mochilero, lo interesante es que eres el dueño de tu tiempo, puedes ir aquí o allá y cuando quieras o quedarte en ese maravilloso lugar, que de pronto te hace poner la piel de gallina o te da escalofríos espirituales. Eso para mí es único. De otro lado, en lo que se refiere a plata, sí, mochilear resulta más barato, lo cual no quiere decir que no te enteres de cuales son los lugares perfectos para visitar, y mucho menos ahora, que el internet te pone todo en una pantalla para que con un cafecito Colombiano en tu laptop, te organices.
Indeed, on the positive side it is commonplace that many people travelling nowadays, are using other options that do not limit accommodation to just hotels. There are online sites such as Couchsurfing, Airbnb which offer staying at far cheaper places and there is also space for checking recommendations of other guests. Hostelworld, for instance, offers affordable prices for a nice stay with young people, I used a couple of them and they just worked fine.
A propósito, hoy en día con tanta gente viajando, hay otras
opciones que no limitan la posada solamente a hoteles. De hecho, hay ahora muchos sitios en línea tales como Couchsurfing, Airbnb que te ofrecen quedarte en lugares que salen mucho más económicos y también se pueden verificar recomendaciones de otros viajeros que han usado este servicio... Hostelworld, por ejemplo, ofrece precios que son accesibles y te quedas en lugares junto a mucha gente joven. Yo he usado algunos de ellos, sin problemas.
On the other hand, it is not plain sailing that backpacking might also trigger some difficulties that are not easy to solve. You must get ready for the unexpected or that same freedom of being able to go anywhere and at anytime might give you trouble. For example, we met on the road two Scottish cyclists who were robbed in Peru, poor them, they were asking for money to continue their travel, good thing was most of the bus passengers chipped in to help. You might say, they were definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time, but hey, that could have also happened on a package tour, right?
Anyways, after so much thinking, I decided to head South and look for a
respite which I definitely managed to find. I did lots of Google search for the pre-planning, which consisted in looking into other writers' blogs, their recommendations for restaurants and hotels and hostel prices as well as different excursions.
De otro lado, no es que todo sea tan sencillo, a veces el viajar como mochilero puede también provocar algunas dificultades que no son tan fáciles de solucionar. Debes estar listo para lo inesperado o incluso, esa misma libertad te puede conducirte a lugares o tiempos que no deberías. Por ejemplo, en uno de los viajes, pero esto fue ya en Perú, nos encontramos a dos ciclistas Escoceses, a quienes habían robado y los pobres les tocaba parar los buses para pedir ayuda para poder dirigirse a una capital y poder continuar su viaje. Menos mal que la mayoría de pasajeros contribuimos para ayudarles. Indiscutiblemente, se encontraban en algún lugar, en un tiempo quizás no conveniente, dirán algunos, pero bien, eso hubiera podido suceder en un viaje organizado, verdad?
Después de tanto pensarlo, decidí dirigirme hacia el sur para escapar el aburrimiento de esos días. Eso sí, lo que hice fue hacer mucha investigación en Google para planear
todo, busqué blogs para mirar las experiencias de otras personas, sitios recomendados y precios de hoteles, hostales y excursiones a diferentes sitios.
A shame I didn't have more than a week to spend in Ecuador since given its array of diversity, this lovely destination would be ideal for a 3-week holiday and then you won't have to rush through things. My schedule was Bogotá- Ipiales -150.000 pesos by Bolivariano bus- and then Tulcán, Ecuador, which took me 2 hours. So, after eating out in several bus stations, I was with my new big backpack, ready to sleep for about 23 hours that lasted my first journey. I know it would be tiresome but long bus rides were a condition I had to meet if I wanted to travel cheaply- the good thing... it went smoothly.
Una lastima que no tenia mas que una semana para pasarla en Ecuador ya que con tanta diversidad, uno no quisiera tener que agilizar tanto las permanencias en algunos lugares. Mi viaje lo programé yendo primero a Bogotá, de ahí a Ipiales pagué 150.000 pesos en Bolivariano y posteriormente a Tulcán, Ecuador, lo cual duró 2 horas. Así que luego de
comer varias veces en terminales, me dispuse a estar listo con mi gran maletín, para dormir las 23 horas que duró mi primer trayecto. Si, el viaje en bus fue largo, lo cual sabia cuando hice mi averiguación, viajes largos era la condición si quería ahorrarme unos pesos- pero la verdad que no hubo problemas.
I found myself surrounded by the incredible beauty of Ecuador Ecuador, apart from providing lots of opportunities for budget backpackers, gives you the chance to be touristy. Its amazing landscapes and mountainous land offer diversity and plenty of opportunities for exploring the valley city, in fact, trying to find the Amerindian or the Inca's ruins that lived in this area many years ago has become a popular activity for many adventurous travellers. And yet, don't get excited, this first time backpacker only had one week to explore the country. Funnily enough, that is the time some travel guides advice to devote to Quito only. Imagine then...Therefore, I need another visit soon to actually be able to get to the beautiful Galápagos Islands, admire museums or find all these ruins they all talk
about. But thanks God I cannot complain since I had the chance to visit some cities such as Tulcan, Quito and Cuenca as I was on my way to Machu Pichu.
Ecuador, ademas de ofrecer tantas oportunidades para los mochileros, te da el chance de convertirte en alguien turístico. sus bellos paisajes y su terreno montañoso ofrecen diversidad y te brinda muchas oportunidades de exploración, tanto que para los mas fuertes, se ha vuelto muy popular el tratar de encontrar las ruinas de las culturas Amerindias o Incas que habitaron esta región hace tantos años. Debo aclarar que yo sólo tenia una semana para dedicarle a Ecuador, que es lo que chistosamente, algunos textos turísticos aconsejan para dedicarle solamente a Quito. Así que necesito volver pronto para poder llegar hasta las Islas Galápagos, visitar los museos o seguir la huella de las ruinas que les hablaba antes. Pero gracias a Dios, no me puedo quejar pues pude visitar algunas ciudades como Tulcán, Quito and Cuenca en mi ruta mochilera para llegar a Machu Pichu.
TULCAN, In The Province of Carchi, Ecuador When I first stepped on the Ecuatorian land, I was amazed by
what a lady, from a corner shop, told me... she said the place I first needed to visit for sure was the cemetery, and I am not lying, it instantly made me think I looked awful after so much bus riding, which is normal, right? But when she saw me even paler than I normally am, she laughed and told me she was referring to some pine sculptures I needed to admire at the cemetery, as every tourist does.
Cuando llegué por la primera vez a tierra Ecuatoriana, me impresionó el comentario de una señora de una tienda quien me dijo que no me podia ir de Tulcan sin visitar el cementerio. y no les miento, el primer pensamiento mío fue que debía tener una cara de muerto luego de ese viaje tan largo y como no soy pálido, jejejej, pues peor. Ya me tranquilicé cuando ella me habló de que como todo turista, tenía que visitar unas esculturas en pino en el cementerio de Tulcán.
309 green sculptures at a cemetery...W...k? I thought, but hey, little did I know that well located at 20 minutes from 'Rumichaca, these world mythologies carved in cypress were the
reason why you meet so many tourists at the cemetery. Anyway, I was so mesmerised at the view of such incredible figures that I actually stayed a lot more than I would customarily stay in a place like this. As a matter of fact, I learned that Mr Guerrero, an Ecuadorian caretaker had for long cultivated the brilliant idea of working on the cypress trees, surrounding the tombs, and transform them into a topiary. These figures display local indigenous folklore as there are designs of Inca motifs, angels and lots of archways.
309 esculturas verdes en un cementerio? de qué diablos me habla, pensé, pero poco sabia yo que apenas a 20 minutos de Rumichaca, estas esculturas talladas en ciprés son la razón por la cual hay tantos turistas adornando el cementerio y estuve tan embelesado con esa vista de estas figuras tan increíbles que en realidad, me quedé más de lo presupuestado en un lugar lúgubre de este tipo. Aprendí entonces que el cuidador del cementerio, un tal Sr. Guerrero tuvo la idea brillante de trabajar los pinos que rodeaban las tumbas y transformarlas en esta fantástica poda ornamental. Las figuras presentan aspectos del folclor indígena, hay muchos
motivos Incas, ángeles y muchos arcos.
What I liked the most was when a couple told me that once the talented Mr Guerrero died, his 5 sons have actually been taking care of his father's cultural heritage. Legend has it that Mr guerrero once said that
this cemetery represented the union between heaven and earth, which I thought was lovely! However, I was not very much impressed by this late sculptor's words, pronounced at some stage after the transformation of the cemetery, words that are commonly repeated by the natives as if it was a food recipe. Indeed, he stated that
the cemetery was so beautiful that it invites you to die...oops, so that was when I started rushing my visit to that peaceful place, just in case...it gave me the chills... I know we cannot escape from this sad reality, but come on...not just yet.
Lo que me gustó mucho fue el saber que una vez que el talentoso señor Guerrero murió, sus 5 hijos han estado ocupándose desde entonces de cuidar el patrimonio cultural de su padre, quien dijo que el cementerio representaba la union entre el cielo y la tierra, LOVELY!. Sin embargo,
para ser honesto, no me convencieron las palabras que el difunto alguna vez pronunció y que parecen repetirse orgullosa y frecuentemente por los nativos, pues fíjense que decía que el cementerio ahora era tan bonito que lo invitaba a uno a morir. y ahi fue cuando pegué carrera, luego de ese escalofrío, pensé para mis adentros que, aunque es una realidad, no la quiero todavía y
paticas pa'qué te tengo...jejejeje
Yes, you got it right...I didn't return to the cemetery and neither. do I intend to go back for the next 200 years, which is the time that is planned for the sculptures to continue existing. Instead, I bought a
choclo, which is a snack made of corn food at the stalls near the cemetery and also went to the bank to get some American dollars, an activity that included a long queue. Before I forget, if you go, make sure you have enough change, since paying at a restaurant with a hundred dollars was a bit annoying. Indeed, the waiter told me they do not make change for you. Later I learned that apparently, they fear that the big notes might be false as they had
had many bad experiences, so then I had to go back to the bank for a longer queue to have some change in my pockets. 'There I go, my first tip for ya.
Bien, pues ya no volví al cementerio y que se sepa que no, no gracias, no planeo volver durante los próximos 200 años, que es lo que se supone que durarán los pinos esculpidos. Mejor, me dio hambresita y comí un snack en los puestos que hay cerca al cementerio. Enseguida me dirigí al banco para cambiar dólares, lo que incluía una gran cola que tuve que hacer. Antes que lo olvide, si va, asegúrese de tener suficiente cambio porque cuando traté de pagar en un restaurante con un billete de 100 dólares, el mesero me respondió que ellos no daban cambio. Luego, cuando volví a preguntar en otro lado, parece que evitan recibir los billetes con grandes denominaciones porque les ha pasado que les han salido falsos. Como resultado, tuve que volver al banco a hacer otra cola y dejar suficiente cambio en los bolsillos. Pero si fue cansón eso, así que ahi les va mi primer consejo.

Quito, a destination you shouldn't miss!!! When you arrive in Quito, the air is quite pleasant and as the second highest capital in the world, it might leave you breathless..., no wonder why some people, who have not had the chance to acclimatise, might experience altitude sickness as they suddenly find themselves walking at 2,850 metres (9,350 ft) above sea level. Indeed, the ANDES MOUNTAINS might cause a bit of a headache for some, thus, you need to make sure you drink plenty of water just in case.
Cuando llegues a Quito, el aire es bastante agradable y como es la segunda capital más alta en el mundo, te puede dejar sin aliento...no se me hace raro que algunas personas, que no tuvieron la oportunidad de climatizarse, podrían sufrir de mal de altura pues el caminar a semejante altura de 2580 metros sobre el nivel del mar. En efecto los Andes podrían provocar dolores de cabeza para algunos así que ustedes necesitan asegurarse de beber suficiente agua, por si acaso.
Located on the Pichincha Volcano, the city is also known as God's Little Face and declared UNESCO's Cultural Heritage in 1978. The Old Town is beautifully kept with stunning buildings such as museums, squares and churches allowing us to learn about the history of Ecuador, all well-put on an array of old streets that allow you to travel in time. A good job they have done for it has conquered painters, investors and salesmen that you can see everywhere; you also see people queuing to attend shows at the Teatro National Sucre, the cafes and restaurants are always packed and the most curious take photos of stunning buildings, which make the Old Town a very touristy place.
Localizada en el Volcán Pichincha, la ciudad es también conocida como La Carita de Dios y fue declarada en 1978 por la UNESCO Primer Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad. Me gustó harto el Centro Histórico pues esta super bien conservado, lleno de edificios restaurados como museos, plazas e iglesias que parecen hacer parte de las páginas de un libro enseñándonos sobre la historia de Ecuador, lo cual permite viajar en el tiempo. Sus promotores han hecho un buen trabajo pues día
a día se ven inversionistas, pintores y vendedores en todos lados, otros haciendo cola para presenciar diferentes shows notablemente en el Teatro Nacional Sucre. Los cafes y restaurantes aparecen llenos y los más curiosos toman fotos en lo que parece ser un Centro Turístico muy concurrido.
Transportation is quite convenient, as you can get around town quite easily, they offer quite a lot of possibilities, specially for handicapped people, which I valued a great deal. The system is so organised and Ecuatorians are always willing to help. There are also metro buses, troles and Ecovias, which are connected to a bus going to the airport, that's quite handy, I thought. You can also find chivas, which are very colourful vehicles with party music and very flashy lights famous in South American countries. The metro hasn't started yet but I can tell that there is a culture of care already built, I say so as I could see exhibitions of possible scenarios of its good and bad use and you can feel people got the idea.
El transporte es muy conveniente y se puede recorrer fácilmente la ciudad, ofrecen muchas posibilidades para los descapacitados, lo cual me
gustó mucho. El sistema es tan organizado y los Ecuatorianos están siempre listos para ayudar. También hay metro buses, tranvías y Ecovias que están conectados con un bus que va al aeropuerto, algo bien practico para los viajeros. Me gustan mucho las chivas, que son muy famosas en Suramerica por la energía que se desborda en ellas con música, baile y esas luces que son tan intermitentes. Se espera que el metro empiece pronto, y desde ahora, se siente que ya hay una cultura construida alrededor de su uso, pude presenciar algunas campañas que pretendían mostrar el buen procedimiento para la compra de tiquetes y uso del metro. De todas maneras, se puede ver que los Quiteños son gente que cuidan de su ciudad y eso se siente a todo momento.
There, you are exposed to an array of cultures, as Ecuador is a multiethnic country with Indigenous, European and African ancestors. The traditional clothes of people on the streets and sellers in small shops allow the display of unique customs and spiritual traditions that are still present in the city. The old Town offers lovely walks to stroll the wonderful narrow streets and there are actually
nice tours planned that allow you to get to magnificent churches and monasteries, colonial buildings and squares as well as vegetable markets to mention but a few. That's for sure, if you go on these tours, I may assure you that your time and money has been well spent in architectural and cultural terms. I experienced it myself and I have to confess that I unexpectedly saw myself running literally from one of the underground monasteries as I experienced claustrophobic problems, which I ignored I suffered from.
Allí estas expuesto a una variedad de culturas ya que Ecuador es un país multiétnicos con ancestros indigenas, Europeos y Africanos. La ropa tradicional de las personas en las calles y vendedores en almacenes pequeños permiten dar una muestra de únicas costumbres y tradiciones espirituales que están aun presentes en la ciudad. La Ciudad Vieja ofrece maravillosas caminatas que te permiten ver las maravillosas calles estrechas o puedes pagar uno de los tantos toures que te llevan a las magnificas iglesias y monasterios, edificios coloniales y plazas, así como diversos mercados, para nombrar algunos. Lo que si es seguro es que todo esto es tiempo y plata bien gastada en términos culturales.
y arquitectónicos. Yo lo probé pero me tuve que salir corriendo de uno de los monasterios subterráneos debido a problemas de claustrofobia que nunca supe sufría.
As for the people, I found the Ecuadorians very nice hosts, always willing to give you information and as they are years ahead of Colombia -as far as tourism is concerned-, they offer tons of cozy budget hostels with affordable prices and very kind staff. On the bus, I met a very lovely lady who worked at the town hall and we had an interesting conversation about bilingualism, which helped me to compare their situation with ours. I was very impressed when she told me there is a project that has already achieved the running of universities for child prodigies who want to become scientists and I could tell, they invest a lot in education, which we have to learn here in our country.

26 Kms from Quito Centercon ella, estuvimos conversando sobre proyectos de bilingüismo, lo que me permitió comparar la situación Ecuatoriana con la Colombiana. Me impresioné cuando me habló de las universidades que tienen para los niños genios que aspiran a ser científicos, lo cual me dejo ver que ellos invierten mucho en educación, y de lo cual tenemos que aprender nosotros aquí.
The City in the Middle of the World. La Mitad del Mundo On my visit to this landmark, I wanted to feel what many keen travellers have written on blogs, that is standing on two hemispheres at the same time, which I did as you can see on the photo. Anyway, located at 26 kms from Quito Centre -which I learned from the small museum nearby- the Middle of the World was chosen by Charles-Marie de La Condamie in 1736. Technology later proved that that he got it wrong by about 200 metres; problem was that the monument had already been built so it had to stay. But I really felt I was standing right on the two Equators, that's for sure, and many tourists continue visiting and they head later
to the cheap museum there. They give you information about the Ecuadorian culture, its tribes and some tips about Quito. Interestingly enough, they show you some gravity experiments, but I must confess a mathematician will surely appreciate more... Anyway, if you don't mind about the small inaccuracy, take a bus from La Ofelia terminal bus station and get off when everybody does, that's really the best advice to enjoy the visit to the small museum. Buses are very cheap, 30 cents, or you can take taxis, which as in any country, are the most expensive but comfortable option.
Esta era una de las principales visitas que tenia planeadas pues luego de leer varios blogs, quería sentir lo que decían muchos viajeros que es el pararse en dos hemisferios al mismo tiempo. Ya en el museo, aprendí que el monumento está ubicado a 26 kms del centro de Quito, el Centro del Mundo fue escogido por Charles-Marie de La Condamie en su expedición en 1736. La tecnología luego permitió saber que en realidad se habían equivocado por unos metros, pero ya se había construido el edificio, así que ahi se quedó. Sin embargo, yo sí me sentí en la pura

Definitivamente una de las mejores ciudades que he podido visitar en todos mis viajes. mitad del mundo, entre los dos Ecuadores y los turistas siguen visitándolo, lo cual es agradable, ya que hay un pequeño museo, que es barato, donde se puede aprender sobre la cultura Ecuatoriana, sus tribus y la ciudad. Interesante es el hecho de que te muestran varios experimentos de gravedad en esta parte del planeta, y bueno, esto talvez lo apreciaría mejor un matemático. Para ir hay que tomar un bus desde el terminal de la Ofelia y bajarse donde todos se bajan, lo cual es otro consejo que se les puede dar...los buses son bastante baratos o si quiere, puede tomar un taxi, pero la diferencia es grande
Cuenca A colonial city with lots of charm and presence and given its stunning architecture and old churches that date back to the 16th Century, the city has been named a Unesco World Heritage Site. There, you find delicious food, first of all, as well as many craft traditions, such as ceramics, metalwork and the very well-known Panama hat. I loved meeting the expatriates and speaking some English since there are pubs where I went for a nice conversation as foreigners were most proud
to tell me how they made it to Ecuador and the reasons behind their stay. One of them told me it was like living in a paradise, I could've guessed it though... and looking into the architecture and its mixture of old and new, you just go... WOW...who doesn't enjoy having great views all day? I gather the climate is another reason why they wouldn't go anywhere else and no, you can't blame them!
Cuenca es una ciudad colonial con mucho encanto y presencia y dada su sorprendente arquitectura e iglesias antiguas que datan del siglo XVI. La ciudad fue declarada patrimonio de la UNESCO. Allí encontré primero que todo buena papa, así como muchas tradiciones artesanales, tales como cerámicas, trabajo en metal y el archirrequeteconocido sombrero Panamá. Me gustó encontrarme con extranjeros en una cervecería y hablar un poco de inglés. Ellos muy amablemente me compartieron el por qué se quedaron en la city, pero no hay que ir muy lejos, uno de ellos describió a Cuenca como un paraíso para vivir. La verdad, yo lo hubiera imaginado...Si se piensa en la arquitectura y su bella combinación de lo viejo y lo nuevo, se queda uno embelesado. O
díganme, a quien no le gusta tener ese cielo todos los días? Pienso que el clima es otra de las razones del por qué no se irían para ningún otro lugar. y no, no se les puede culpar!!
It is my belief that even if you are not a good photographer, being there is like taking a free course of photography, the views are amazing so please, please, please... make sure you don't forget your camera. I will always hold Cuenca´s views in awe.
Creo, con toda sinceridad, que así uno no sea un buen fotógrafo, estar allí ya es como ganarse un concurso gratis de fotografía, las vistas son sorprendentes, así que no olvidar sus cámaras si van. Siempre recordaré con respeto las bellas vistas de la ciudad.

Encebollado de pescado, Encebollado fish soup, I asked for a second helping as it was delicious. I also tasted the Choclo, a delicious corn snack we also have in Colombia. What I didn't taste and it is supposed to be one of the best is the
Cuy, a small rodent they eat on special occasions. Oops, sorry for the pet lovers...
Tengo recuerdos agradables de la comida genial de allí. Me gustó mucho el Encebollado de pescado, tanto que me tocó repetir. El choclo, que es un snack de maíz, que también lo tenemos en Colombia, lo comí mas de una vez. Lo que si no probé fue el Cuy, que es algo que ellos comen en ocasiones especiales, ese cuy se considera mascota en algunos países, qué pecao.
To conclude... The advantage of travelling in Ecuador is that given its small size, crossing Ecuador can be done in only eight hours, which helped me to make the best of my trip. I would advise anybody who wants to go backpacking in Ecuador, to visit Quito and Cuenca or even Guayaquil, which I missed and everybody says there is a lot to see there. I also met some interesting expatriates, in Quito, for example, I met a Colombian guy, who imports homeopathic products and we had a big laugh thinking about cultural differences between Ecuador and Colombia. In Cuenca, a couple of Colombian ladies advised me to go and teach in Ecuador, which at first sight, sounds like a dish fit for the gods as you are paid in dollars. That would be great but if I were not planning to stay near my family for the time being, I'd seriously consider that possibility as I liked what I saw in this spectacular neighbouring country, indeed, natives were quite amiable.
La ventaja de viajar en Ecuador es que dado su tamaño pequeño, se puede cruzar en sólo ocho horas, lo cual me ayudó para gozarme este viaje. Yo le aconsejaría a alguien interesado en irse de mochilero en no pensarlo más, puede visitar estas ciudades a las que fui o incluso, otras como Guayaquil, que todo el mundo decía era muy linda. En esas travesías, tuve el gusto de compartir con algunos Colombianos, por ejemplo, conocí a un Valluno en Quito, con quien nos tomamos un tinto y él me habló de su negocio de productos homeopáticos que llevaba desde su tierra, y afirmaba ser un excelente negocio. Tuvimos una conversación agradable sobre las diferencias culturales entre Ecuador y nuestro país. También, unas Paisas, en Cuenca, me aconsejaban irme a enseñar inglés en Ecuador, lo cual ellas veían como una gran oportunidad pues el salario lo recibes en dólares. Bueno, si mi objetivo no fuera el estar cerca de mi familia por ahora, talvez lo hubiera considerado pues me gustó todo lo que vi en este vecino país. La gente fue muy amigable.
