We have a slightly later start than usual today. Our flight out of Tenerife is not until 15.05.

This is a forty day + travel taking in Manchester overnight, Sheffield / Rotherham overnight, Worksop, Nottinghamshire overnight visiting family, Derby for lunch, Aston Clinton, Bucks for lunch, Slough, Berkshire (Donna) and Bagshot, Surrey visiting relatives, then flying out to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) for ten days, boarding a Royal Caribbean cruise for fourteen nights, stopping at Muscat, Oman, Mumbai, India, Cochin, India, Penang, Malaysia finishing in Singapore where we spent a further six nights. This concluded with one further night in Dubai, three nights in Gatwick, Crawley then a flight back to Tenerife South.

We got the timings slightly wrong, and our hire car had to be back for 11.00, so we had a four hour wait in the airport. Luckily, we have our own free Wi-Fi, so can keep ourselves busy.

Today we are flying Thomas Cook from Tenerife South to Manchester, England. We have not flown with them for a long time.

As we will be away for 43 days for this vacation, we initially have two hold bags.

They opened the check-in desks at about 12.00 and as we were the only ones waiting that had priority boarding, we were first to be checked in.

The tickets worked out cheaper to buy their package of the flight, 25KG hold baggage, 10KG hand baggage, a seat reservation, priority boarding, a meal and free drinks throughout the fight than it would have been to buy it all separately. We were not expecting much from the meal and thought that we would get only a few drinks free.

Whilst still at home, we checked on the incoming flight and it was 45 minutes late leaving Manchester. Luckily, it caught up on time and landed at about the scheduled time.

We managed to get through the gates first, but then they loaded us onto a bus and we lost our priority placing, but no worries. Normally, we like priority boarding so that we can ensure we can stow our hand luggage near to us. We managed to get one bag on top of where we were and one above the next row back on the other side of the isle. No big problems or stress there.

We took off nearly on time.

The first drinks trolley run was about 45 minutes after take-off.

We noticed that the family in front of us were ordering lots of drinks each, so we did the same and the hostess seemed to accept this as normal.

About an hour and half after take-off, they came and asked if we wanted any drinks with dinner, so we got more free drinks.

Dinner was a James Martin meal of chicken tikka which was very nice. There was also a sticky toffee pudding. A small box with a couple of cheese blocks, some crackers, some butter and some jam and also a small chocolate. All very nice and very filling.

After that they came around with the drinks trolley and again we were encouraged to have multiple drinks. Just a shame they did not have Baileys. It would have been a great way to finish off the meal.

We stopped one of the hostesses one more time to request a couple more drinks.

We thought that the included drinks on board would be limited, and were very impressed with the service and quantity we have received. We would definitely pick that again. It saves having to bring lots of drinks on board, as they are so expensive on the planes.

We landed at Manchester about 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Looks like we landed with about ten other planes, so when we got to passport control, there were hundreds of people there. They had it well under control there and managed to keep it moving most of the time. We got through in about 20 minute which was a lot quicker than we were expecting.

By the time we were through passport control, our bags were already on the carousel. So about 40 minutes from landing and we were waiting for the car to our first hotel of the holiday.

Tonight we are staying at Etrop Grange Hotel. This is on the edge of Manchester Airport. Best of all they have a free shuttle, which means that we can delay picking up the car till tomorrow and Theresa can have a small drink today.

Unfortunately, as an old building, the hotel does not have any lifts, so we had to carry all our heavy bags through and up the hotel.

First stop, the hotel bar for a nice cold drink. Great way to officially start off the holiday.

As we have to go back to the airport in the morning to collect the car, we are not unpacking much here, just the essentials.
