This morning we had a lazy morning. The high tide was at 8:30am and we could see from our hotel window that the water level was spilling over the edge of the canal wall so we took it slowly getting ready. The forecast is rain for the next 4 days but today was supposed to be 20 and sunny so we decided to go to the Piazza San Marco today to see it at its best.

We crossed over the bridge in front of our hotel and had a look at the planks that they put up to walk on. Breakfast was in a café in the plaza across the canal from us.

After this, we walked through all the tiny alleys in the direction of Piazza San Marco. On the way we stopped at the shops leading up to the Rialto Bridge for a couple of crepes and a look at the Grand Canal at Rialto.

We walked across the Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge) and found our way to the Piazza San Marco, where we saw the Basilica di San Marco, the Campanile (clock tower), Musee Correr and the Column of St Theordore (all from the outside)

We walked through the square to the canal bank and looked across to the island of San Giorgio. We walked east along the water’s edge, past the Lion of St Mark Column and over the Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs) to go to a church, Chiesa di San Zaccaria.

After this, we backtracked west to see the Teatro La Fenice (Opera House) and then walked on over the Ponte dell’Accademia bridge on the way to the church Scuola Grande dei Carmini.

On the way, we stopped for a late lunch at Bar alla Toletta.

We completed our round trip and returned to the hotel about 4pm more than ready to put our feet up, having walked almost 7km.

A cup of tea and several pre-dinner drinks later, we ventured out again for dinner at Ristorante Pizzeria Dofin. Jo had fried Sole and I had Escalope in Lemon Sauce and we shared grilled polenta and grilled vegetables. It was amazing.
