Carl and I are now in the Sierra Nevada mountains. We have passed the Mediterranean Beach town of Salou, visited Gaudi’s (Gaudi- not Gandhi) home town and visited the cheese heaven of Murcia but that will all have to wait for another post as the connection up here in the mountains is slower than a truant child with his report card in his back pocket.

Vielha is a large town with lots of good restaurants. We went to a Michelin Mentioned restaurant. Their speciality is the local mushroom called Ceps. The pasty lady advertising the ceps is a carboard cut-out.

There is good food, wine, cheese and craft beer everywhere. By chance we arrived at a small mountain village and had one of the best meals of the trip, local rabbit and duck, with local vegetables, a bottle of local wine and homemade cheese. The cheese was exceptional.

The mountains were not as rugged at Torla but there were many pleasant walks to waterfalls. There was a Via Ferrata, Iron Staircase, which Carl would love to have climbed but there was no safety equipment and climbing without would be lethal. I got separated from Carl on the walk and ran into a herd of mountain goats. They scared the poo poo out of me and I scampered down the mountain. Carl caught up with them and took their pictures.

The mountain roads were your standard 1.5 lanes wide, with occasional cars coming in the opposite direction. They were dramatic with soaring, imposing cliff on one side, fearsome deep yawning chasm on the other, raging torrent below, loose gravel and twisting, blind hairpin turns. Butt clenching! Carl announced he had become quite comfortable driving on the European side of the road and no longer had to think where the left and right side of the car were.

I will post again in about a week from a beach town in Portugal. My good friend Corinne will join us for a few days.
