Hi Everybody!
The travel agency came through with our visa and we spent Sunday in Shenzhen. It was not a remarkable trip but we enjoyed the time that we spent with Lyn and Pat, 2 business people with Russell Stover Candy. They were going over to visit a factory that prints paper products for their company.
We took a train from Hong Kong to LuWu where we crossed the border. We were limited to visiting Shenzhen since we only had a one day visa. Twenty years ago, Shenzhen was just a fishing village located by the Pearl River and across from Hong Kong. Now, it is one of China's top three high technology development centers. We found that there were not a lot of things for us to visit. It doesn't have the history of many other China locations. We walked around the city and just observed the people. Some of our observations were:
McDonalds offering a gree pea pie - looked just like a U.S. apple pie
2 women with garbage cans lying across their laps as they ate from them (ploy for money)
men selling many different kinds of furs
3 story mall type building where every shop sold tea or teapots
Buddhist monks trying to give you good luck cards
huge mall called Fake World where every product was a knock off of a famous brand
high tea ceremony at the Shangrli Hotel
restaurants with tanks & baskets of eels, different fish, clams, other mussels, etc. for you to
select from

It was not a particularly fun day. We learned that when you tell a Chinese person that you don't like dog, they ask, "How about cats?" This conversation came up on the train when one of our companions told us a story. He had gone to China to buy a factory. The previous owner wanted to take him to a special restaurant where they served dog. He said that he had to work hard to get out of the situation. While we were talking, a Chinese lady sitting nearby starting smiling. She told us the Chinese response about cats. She thought our whole conversation was funny.
We are spending today in Hong Kong. We will be home soon.
Take care,
Everette
