Oregon. 2018. Garibaldi Day 4
Why does America have to have vehicles with the biggest, noisiest engines? Whether it is a modest sized car, pickup truck or lorry they have a V8 engine making the loudest roar ever, which makes a Subaru Impreza on heat seem like a whisper. The day started well with a short ride into Astoria along a cycleway into town alongside a disused railway by the coast. We then took Highway 101 south over the bridge from Astoria and were deafend to distraction. The occasions we were able to take a side road, like the one to Seaside, were a blessing. Here we saw the end of the Lewis and Clark Trail if 1806. By the time we had lunch at Canyon Beach the traffic was becoming lighter and it was a tad easier. Before leaving town we went to the beach and saw the large rocks just off the coast which were reminiscent of the 12 Apostles of the Great Ocean Road in Australia. Lunch was half a ham salad sandwich which came as a nice change from the carbo breakfast of bread, waffles, muffins and toast at the Astoria Crest Motel. At lunch time we met a young Canadian couple who were heading south with a tent and musical instruments having a laid back holiday. I had also had a laidback day again following Richard W and Lois at an average 12.6 mph and with trembling legs upon arrival at our motel. I had to smile at the lady on reception with a small dog in the papoose on her back. The evening meal was at the local pub across the road. The pizza was something else and Bill baulked at the 3/4 stage and offered it to the gannets nearby. The fish and chips with garlic bread were also good and a bargain at $10. Bed time already? 8.30pm and the eyes are wanting to rest after a nice day in the saddle.
