Oregon Report 2.
Christopher had told us not to leave our bikes unattended in Portland without a D lock as they would be stolen so advised that we take the bus if we cannot watch over them. Since it was an independent day with no planned ride or activity we finished building and checking our bikes. Andrew, Bill and myself decided to ride out to Mt Tabor Park and keep our bikes in view. We took one of the many Bike Friendly routes through the suburbs, which are very leafy and contain many very expensive and extremely attractive old houses. The Mount houses some reservoirs half way up and is quite high above the city, giving some good views around but could be better if the felled a few trees from the higher ground. We stopped just outside the one way system around the mount and had a nice lunch. Thinking of my figure I had a nice chicken salad whilst Bill and Andrew had - guess what - yes you are right, blueberry pancakes. I had forgotten the tipping values of the US so asked the waitress how much we should give. She said 18-20%, would you believe it? I said ’How will half of it do’? She responded by hitting my arm, so I gave in and gave her sixpence. Having eaten our fill we rode down the hill to the Willamette waterfront and took a really great cycleway along the edge of the river passing loads of bridges and seeing loads of this new craze of electric scooters, whose riders seem to be creating mayhem in town. We had no problem with them. We crossed the Iron Bridge which lifts up the centre section pulling up the railway line and the cycleway using electricity and counterbalance weights. At the other side were tents and makeshift shelters that Chris warned us about housing vagrants and drug addicts, who gave taken over the Chinatown district. We went to the next bridge to come back across only to find it was difficult to ride around and get back to our own side of the road so we carried our bikes up a long staircase to get our leg muscles ready for tomorrow. Having liked the New Season supermarket that much we drifted in for a coffee and a cake in our return, magic.
Dinner at the Life of Pie again with all the group before going back for a brew and natter before an early bed again tonight ready for breakfast at 7.30 tomorrow. Great start to the tour with everyone getting on well and the mtemperature in the mid 20’s and sun. We love sun.
