The days are starting to tick away now!
A mixed day of sunshine and clouds, mostly clouds so popped along to the Farmers Market, always interesting to see and I think every time I have visited Funchal I am drawn to the market.
Unfortunately the smell of the fish gets you first !
By the time we arrived most of the days catch had been sold but there were still scabbard, tuna, snappers, and a variety of other fish still for sale.
A group of local men were chatting away I'm guessing they were saying "What's that got to do with the price of fish'.
It was soon time to move to more pleasant aromas, the choice of vegetables and in particular fruits on display were probably some of the most photographed produce in Europe. The stall holders are happy to cut into the fruits to offer a taster, today I gave the tasting a miss and concentrated on taking photographs.
On the different levels of the market you can buy typical Madeiran handicrafts, cork items, embroidery items and much more. There was a small cruise ship in port today so the stalls were busy with
passengers spending their Euros.
Finally I was in the area where the flowers are sold, the flower sellers have to wear traditional costume and probably get a bit fed up of everyone taking their photos so it's rare to get one to pose. Locals and visitors alike are able to buy their flowers here, such a fantastic choice of the beautiful tropical blooms that are common here in Madeira.
As we left the market we ventured past a shoe shop where David had spotted a pair of shoes he rather fancied.
He can now add a pair of yellow suede shoes to his collection, they will definitely come in very handy for the flower festival holidays we have planned later in the year.
It was soon coffee time, so we stopped again at the roof garden restaurant I visited a couple of days ago. We whiled away the time overlooking the cable cars as they ferried visitors to the top of the mountain, en route to Monte Palace & The Botanical Gardens.
As we sat enjoying our drink, there were tomatoes, fennel, mint growing in the roof garden which served well for the restaurant. A
new find this roof top garden restaurant so we booked for dinner this evening.

Oh those beautiful fruits! The strawberries ! Bliss ! I had to send you s note when you mentioned the shoes. When we were there two years ago Paul had brought so called comfortable trainers for walking about. But ! Not being something he usually wears he hadn't realised he must have had them a while. The soles had gone hard. Can you imagine sliding about on those sloping cobbled streets? So yes off we went to the shops. Miraculously they had size 12's so he bought 2 pairs and he's been wearing them fir thus holiday. I do believe he also bought some smarter shoes too. I do hope David wears his shoes as much as Paul has. Last day for us tomorrow xx
