Just a short word about one of the wonders of the modern world - the visa debit card with international functionality and no charge for cash withdrawals. We have brought no cash with us, but each time we arrive at an airport, I go to a machine and withdraw cash. I don't need to know the exchange rate (and I don't) and I know it'll never let me get more than about 250 pounds at a time. So all those working to keep these wonderful devices and their associated systems going, many thanks.

Willy says I should also mention that the internet and its support staff are also providing a wonderful service to travellers.

Back to Auckland - today began with rain and grey skies - just like home. We set out with a list of chores to do. First stop - hire a cheap car for three weeks. Then we found a cheap internet cafe where we could download photos. The one we found was really fast and we worked out how to add photos to each blog entry, so will add some to this entry later. An added bonus was that we checked our November premium bonds and have won 300 quid. Third task was to visit a pharmacy, so Willy could get anti histimine tablets for bites - maybe he'll feel better soon. Last chore was to buy thongs (I just really wanted to write that) - thongs are NZ/Australian for flip flops.

Tasks achieved, we went for a ride on the town tour bus and a walk in the park. We fell into conversation with three recipients of care-in-the-community while sitting on a bench, and on their advice, visited the museum. It was really good, with video demos of birds and birdsong, as well as a scary exhibition about volcanos. Auckland is apparently on an active volcano, with dozens of others locally.

Tomorrow we pick up the car and get out of the city, heading North - kauri forests and beaches, whales and dolphins are the attractions.
