As big as Sydney was, as small is Cairns. Granted, it is a city and its much bigger than the cute little towns we encountered on our roadtrip, but it took us no more than half an hour to see the entire city centre. It was cute though, and had a nice market for fruits and veggies. Not to mention that our hostel had a pool with floating bean bags for our spare time!

On our second day, we went on a cruise to the great barrier reef. We had booked an introductory dive in addition to the snorkeling. I'll admit I was quite scared at the beginning. I felt like I couldn't breathe normally, my brain just wouldn't believe that I could breathe under water. However, I pushed through that moment after some reassurance from the instructor and I'm so happy I did! We dove arm in arm with an instructor, which made me feel completely safe. Swimming through the coral felt magical, and there were so many cute fish; I never knew where to look. After that first dive, we were hooked. The snorkeling was cool as well but it couldn't compare to diving, so we signed up for a second dive. This time, our instructor let us swim by ourselves. We still had to follow him but could move freely this time. And guess what? We saw sharks!! They were about 1,5 to 2 meters long but were more scared of us than we were of the shark. We also saw a baby clownfish (Nemo!), huge humpheads and so many other cute, beautiful and/or bizarre fish. One of them wasn't even scared of me; it swam up to me until it was about 10 cm away from my face and I was the one backing off, since I didn't want to harm the tiny fish. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos since my phone doesn't like water that much, but take my word for it (or go and find out for yourself): it was amazing!

The day after that, we took a bus tour to Cape Tribulation, in the rainforest above Cairns. I really enjoyed walking around the rainforest and the overnight stay. The next day we went on a “crocodile cruise” and saw 4 crocodiles! 2 were quite little and 2 were 3,5 to 4m long!

Our last day in Cairns we went on a waterfall tour, and boy did we see a lot of water fall. Not just from the waterfalls, unfortunately, as it was raining all day long.. on the bright side, this did make the waterfalls flow a lot faster and it was awesome to watch!

Stay tuned for our adventures on multiple islands along the east coast during the next weeks!
