Last night we stayed in the most comfortable bed thus far. David watched the All Blacks and I caught up on all laundry. Great.
We woke up to perfect weather and headed off at 9, as usual.
For 30 mins we saw acres and aces of vineyards - some vines being trained upward, some just 2 strands horizontally along the wires. We didn't take the time to do any wine-tasting - most opened at 10 anyway.
Soon the flat gave way to hills and we found the highly recommended place for coffee. The ocean is so turquoise and clear! At the cafe, the minute you left your table and leftovers, the gulls attacked. We were lucky to not lose anything.
Lovely stops along the way, culminating in the visit to baby seals who somehow work their way up this sharp stream from the sea to the waterfalls and remain there for about 6 months. There were just 4 still up there, and 2 making their way down the stream. Fascinating.
Nearby was the large fur seal colony.
An hour from Christchurch were more vineyards, the youngest in the nation. We arrived at 6:45 and met our hosts Sue and Greg Ellis. Evidently their son played for the All Blacks until last year and now plays in Japan. They recommended a nearby restaurant and the food was delicious: the first steak we've tried, with all these cows! and a lamb shank pie. And not too unreasonable at that.
Another full day of adventures!
