The second of the 3 Dutch Caribbean islands we are visiting is Aruba. Another very hot day with the North Easterly Trade winds the only way to cool the island. We caught a taxi with a lovely lady driver who took us all around and related the history and showed us all there was to see. This was much cheaper than going on an official tour and also avoided the trip to the Aloe Vera factory!
Like Bonaire it is on the whole flat with a few scattered volcanic hills. The local fauna are the Divi trees and Cacti. It has a bigger population than Bonaire ,12000 people, with tourism as its main industry. We went to the Casibari Rock formation and climbed up the top to get good views of the island. She then drove us round the other sights such as the Lighthouse, an old windmill and a tiny open chapel as well as the long beaches and some lovely houses – all quite colourful with an obviously Dutch influence.
