Tree planting and ziplining

Given that Monteverde is in the heart of the Cloud Forest, it was no surprise that we awoke to rain and fog this morning. This only added to the mystical ambiance during our tree-planting excursion first thing today. Costa Rica is undergoing an extensive reforestation project to develop the forest corridor connecting both coasts so that animals have a safe environment in which to live, all the way across the country. Our one little tree was but a small part of this much larger endeavor, but we were glad to participate!

Today was also ziplining day! With 16 zips altogether, ranging from 300 feet to over 3,000 feet long, we spent the late morning flying over the misty Monteverde by zipline. Our capable guides ensured we were secured to the cable with our carabiner and harness before each zip, and then sent us flying through air with the slightest of nudges. What a thrill! The wind in my face, the views of the interminable canopy below my feet, and the singing of the cable zipping me through the air were sensations I will never forget.

And one surprise experience was the second to last stop along the trail—the Tarzan Swing. Standing one at a time atop a metal, freestanding platform, perhaps 35 feet tall, a guide buckled us to the cable, told us to bend our knees, kicked free the gate latch, and before we even had time to think, we were suddenly free-falling down into a wide pendulum swing through the air... Weeeeeee!
