Mid-October, we are ready for our next little adventure...this time...in between business trips for me to Congo and Gabon, a little romantic break in Mauritius for 5 nights.

My first and only visit to Mauritius was back in 2004. I stay at the local Club Med and play golf at Belle Mare top course, as the director of golf was the pro in my own club in Luxembourg way back when I was a junior. I did remember the horrendous taxi rates too...

So this time we are renting a car. Mauritius is not a small island, and renting a car means you are not stuck in your hotel. We are staying the first three nights at Le Meridien and the last two at the Westin. Both resorts are located in the North-West of the island, a good hour drive from the airport.

We received an amazing welcome at Le Meridien. The hotel is a pretty old affair, with most guests on all inclusive package. But they did upgrade us to the Royal Suite, the best room in the resort. Bubbles there was...as well as some serious relax time. The last two days, another nice room at the Westin. This hotel is more luxurious...but their staff are way less glorious than the ones at Le Meridien.

We spend some serious time outside the resorts. One day, it was golf at the new Avalon golf course. The course is in the middle of nowhere, next to superb tea plantations. I guess that due to the fact that this is a new course and that there is no resort around the corner, they have to keep the rates at a pretty decent level. Tanya enjoy the ride, and I actually play a pretty low score.

We spent some time touring the island. Best way for great food is to stop for lunch where the locals go...and yes, that was an amazing Indian food lunch!

Another morning, I went to dive with the Mauritius Underwater Club. This is not a diver operator, but a club, group of friends pouring together their resources to organize dive trips over the weekend. The club is a fun group of locals and expats. I've had the chance to dive with their current president back at home in South Africa ...and yes, this is the cheapest diving I have ever done. We did two dives that morning, a nice wreck than a relax reef dive. Diving here is not world class, but with great company, it was a nice introduction to the locals of Mauritius.

Tanya having worked in the hotel industry for years, who knows, we may end up living here at some stage. Would be fun and interesting...and we already have friends here.

Tanya went back from here to home, and I went my way for few days in Gabon before heading back at home for few weeks of great golf and dive. Imagine, pretty soon, we will been here for a full year. Let put it simply...I love every aspect of it. I'm writing this on Christmas Day. So if you have read all this blog, let me wish you a Merry Christmas! Hope you enjoyed your family time...we did...at home...on the beach!
