So do you guys bring the Ipod along?
Indeed, it's cool how fast things change... so I guess you've seen the asus EEE pc?
I also like the non-technical gadgets. like my penfishing rod... 😉

sorry if my english isn't the best, it's not my mother language.
Do you have any other cool non-technical gadgets?

You english is great! I plan to bring my version of an ipod. I love music and I figure if you're spending hours on trains and such it's nice to have a soundtrack. Reply to this

I recently purchased the Archos 504. It's an amazing little gadget that I think would help out anybody. It's a MP3 player, watch movies, and put pictures on it so you can show people along the way (instead of pulling out your laptop). Another cool feature is you can hook it up directly to any TV (needs standard RCA connection) and record any of your favorite TV shows. I personally think this is a great gadget for anybody who is traveling.

Hi Aaron - If you have that much - then you're trying to pack too much...

For extended trips - one stratagy is to pack for one week and allocate a budget for buying new things on the way- nearly everything that you might need can be bought at your destination.

A website that may help you is: www.onebag.com Reply to this

Take only 2 sets of clothes. Hand washing is a pain, because one set of clothes is usually too little for a laundry service, but the bonus is you get to travel very light. Also apply chuck and replace, and easy come, easy go. Throw away anything that becomes shabby or boring and replace it, rather than taking a lot of stuff with you. And keep it easy come and easy go, so you dont mind throwing things out, if it is something like a sweater and you are now in a hot country.

I usually take 5 to 10 KG with. Even so, most of this weight consists of books. Reply to this

Would you pack the same for a nine month work vacation Mell? Reply to this

Yeah, I packed the same when I went to live in Canada for a year. It did mean however that I had to splash out a few hundred on Winter clothes, when it got cold. But, it was probably best that I did buy them in Canada, because the ones I would have brought from Ireland would not be suitable for the type of cold that happens in Toronto.

But, I also generally choose jobs that have a pretty relaxed dress code, so didnt need things like the types of suits that need to be dry cleaned etc. and that helped with the travelling light. I wore a dress and shoes, that were looked dressed up enough for interviews and work, but also easy maintainance so suitable for travel. Reply to this

I love to ride my bicycle so have packed some of my most important pieces of clothing. Bike clothes aren't cheap so i won't leave them at home. Almost ready, just my helmet to go in and my shoes. Luckily cycling clothes are light. Reply to this

Of course, if you know you are going to be in one place for a while, you can always post clothes ahead instead of carrying them.

I made the mistake of taking a 20kg suitcase/backpack on the Transmongolian. It's not so bad when you are carrying it on the level but - up and down steps and on and off trains (there are no lifts/escalators in China, Mongolia and most of Russia) - 20kg is very heavy after a while! It is also a nightmare to store as it doesn't easily fit under the seats or up in the luggage rack.
