Where is the most interesting or weird place you have slept while travelling?

Like many other people, I've stayed in my share of airports, train stations, a hotel lobby chair, rock hard rock... The worst though was a hostel in Rome--the doors didn't have locks, the room was the size of a closet, there were bugs in the bathroom, there was graffiti all over the walls and the beds were completely questionable. It was probably the worst night of any of my travels, and I actually didn't even end up staying the whole night. Reply to this

We have slept in quite a lot of airports (Changi in Singapore is definitely the best for this!), Sao Paulo bus station which was really dodgy!

The funniest/scariest place was a roundabout in Tupiza, Bolivia after the hostel we stayed at decided they wanted more money, we didn't have the money to give, had a huge row and had to leave. So we slept in the freezing cold with the drunks of Tupiza wandering by with a friendly taxi driver who did a drive by every 20 minutes to check we were ok! No pics though as we kept our valuables well hidden.

Quite a few 'love hotels' too in various Asian countries...sometimes they are the cheapest and only option available. A couple of them had mirrored walls and ceilings (not good if you have a body image problem as the mirrors seemed to make us look distorted like in the Hall of Mirrors!) and back-to-back porn on the TV as well as the normal channels! The hostel in Heidelberg, Germany closed for Christmas and New Years Eve so I ended up sleeping at the train station. There were lots of vagrants there and I thought it wise to befriend them for my own protection. For the five days they made sure I had a constant supply of wine and junk food and they came with me everywhere I went to make sure I was alright. :D

Before Christmas I had scored a job on the US army base in Heidelburg. It started on 2nd January. On that morning I said to the vagrants that I am going now. They asked were I am going. I told them I got a job. They all cheered and congratulated me and one of them offered me a filthy comb to tidy myself up for my first day at work. I think one of the clan getting a job and leaving the vagrant life was a rare thing.

That night the hostel opened again so I went back there. Forever after when I was out with a freind or colleague in Heidelburg one or more vagrants came up to me to ask how my new life is going and if I still have my job. They were always incredibly pleased to hear that I still have my job and never asked me for spare change like they did with everybody else. :D Reply to this

I haven't used to sleep in weird places. But the weirdest sleep I had was on a bench, in a park. That's because I had no more money and the train was going to arrive in that city after a long time. After I woke up, I saw another 2 people sleeping behind the bench. The night before, they weren't there.

Is sleeping on the beach legal in Japan? I am not sure it would be allowed in many places in Europe, anymore. Reply to this

I made a blog with a list of all the places I have slept on my travels: The Lie-in, the Witch and the Bathtub.

(This is the latest version - the one I made before is now both set to 'private' and out of date!)

We never had any problems the few times I did, though maybe it's discouraged in some places.

The first beach we stayed at that weekend we arrived at after dark, and about 10 other people turned out to have the same idea. Great atmosphere - bbqs, fireworks (so readily available in Japan as opposed to NZ/Aus).

The sand dunes in the photo above we had to ourselves, though a couple of people had slept on hard wooden benches back over by the visitor centre. The crazy foreigners (my friend and I) were apparently newsworthy though - were getting our photo taken as we carried our futons back to the car :-) Reply to this

Did you know at what time the tide comes in, Jo? Or did you risk floating away, during the night? Reply to this

Our planning (virtually non-existant) didn't involve checking tide times. Besides, I knew I'd wake up if my feet got wet ;-)

The night on top of the sand dunes - not much chance of the tide getting us. Reply to this

I had a snooze in an airport toilets once because I didn't feel like falling asleep in front of everybody: it was too busy! Reply to this

There is this one bar in Asia that I have made friends with the bar tender and I visit it often. there was a time when I got too drunk and they let me sleep in one of the pool tables on the other room. it is kinda embarrassing when I woke up but I am thankful that they took me in, sort of. I've stayed at the Starlight Hotel ,under the stars ,most of my travels in Australia.1nc a freind invited me to roll out my swag on floor of his hotel room ,in Mt Isa.I woke in the middle of the night n saw no stars so I pulled my groundsheet over me incase it rained.I woke in the morning n reached out to see if the ground was wet.You can imagine my surprise when I felt carpet.
Another time I was in Southern Cross and the only comfy bit of grass I could find was on a slope.I woke in the early morning ,freezing, and only half in my sleeping bag.I pulled my bag up n it was like putting my feet into boiling water.I had slid down the slope during the night so the bottom of my bag was off my groundsheet. It had got wet in the dew and being -0 it had frozen solid. If I hit someone with it it would have killed them.I didn't own a pair of socks so it was hours before my feet stopped burning.
In Darwin the local Aborigionals had a big courtcase to prove East Point was a traditional camping area.As soon as the Judge agreed that they could continue camping there they said how racist that was so the Judge had no choice but to allow everyone to camp there. This is a little known secret but I had a camp there for a few months and I tied my clothesline to a "No Camping" sign Reply to this
