Hey there, I am in Northern Thailand right now and am planning on heading over to Borneo to climb Mt Kinabalu and do some diving in Sipidan....

Wondering the best way to get over there...flight route, buses, trains... as well as info on the best companies to purchase services from.

Also, how far in advance do you need to book your accomodations on the mountain, I was reading that you can't do the climb if you don't already have your accomodations lined up on the hill, true?

What is the total pricing like for the climb?

Diving....heard there are some beautiful ship wrecks....anyone checked them out? Also do you need your advanced to check them out or just the open water? Reply to this

Hey,

Have been in Borneo a few times now, super place to visit... good choice.

If you only want to climb and dive then its best to fly into Kota Kinabalu (KK) on Air Asia or Malaysian airlines. From KK you can organise accom at the Park H.Q and on the mountain for you ascent. You need to pre-book and prepare to wait or have little choice dependng on when you go. Buses usually go from early morning til lunch to Park H.Q where you need to register, confirm accom, hire a guide, etc. These costs depend on whether you are part of a group and its a good idea to find some people to share guide fees. Don't worry, even if you find some overweight grey haired wally to share the fees with you don't have to walk with the guide..... they just bring up the rear and walk with the slowest person.

Its recommended to start climbing earlier rather than later so its a good idea to stay near the Park H.Q which is cheaper than the actual H.Q, there a couple of places just outside the park but not many so it is a risk if you don't book before you arrive. Accom on the mountain is heated/non heated at Laban Rata and the food prices are extremely high therefore take your own or be prepared to eat one meal and take loads of snacks. You need to have overnight accom, its well regulated.

Total pricing for the climb...? Its hard to say... as I have only done it with groups but I would budget about 200 -250 Ringgits (£40)

From the Park H.Q you can take a bus all the way to Sempourna to dive around Sipadan, however you may want to have a break prior to this at one of the hostels/hotels built to accomodate the visitors to the Orangutan sanctuary on the way therefore breaking up the 12 hr + journey. Sempourna is a dive... excuse the pun, stay on an island if there is room.

I dived with Borneo Divers which came recommended by my Dive Masters/ Instructors I know, they took very little attention to my Open Water status and we were diving at the 40m mark on drift dives....! Was unaware of wrecks, just know Sip is famous for large shouls of deep sea pelagics such as Hammerheads/Barracuda and of course the hundreds of Green Turtles you almost get bored of!

If you have more I would recommend flying into Kuching in Sarawak, checking out the Bako national park etc then cruising up the coast to Miri where you can head into the strange Brunei or fly into the jungle to see the Gunung Mulu caves before taking ferries along the coast to KK via Pulua Labuan.... sooooo much to do!

Hope that is not too boring... and definately have a real waterproof jacket, long trousers, a fleece, a warm hat and a head torch to climb. These are a pig to buy in KK so get them in K.L or Singapore first.

Great reply Paul! ditto to all that.

Shipwrecks in Sipadan - not that I'm aware of either; but a 6 hour journey from Kota Kinabalu is Labuan island - where there are some very well respected wrecks; I'm yet to dive them - this year though 😊

A diving friend raves about the reef dives off Miri - again - no personal experience - again they are for more experienced divers.

I'd also add for Mt Kinabalu;

Allow for 2 days rest afterwards; nothing strenuous stairs are feat afterwards.

Take it slow and steady it's hard for two reasons - from 0m to 4400m in 48hours - altitude sickness is common. The steps on the way up are huge for long portions - maybe 2 feet on many steps - try to have shoes with a good grip and gloves as well, bring spare batteries for your head torch - the torches provided by the tour groups are truly terrible so don't be surprised if your sharing your torch between the group.

Have fun 😊 Reply to this

Hi, just a question, what is a good place to stay near (but not in) the HQ, because as you said the hostels on the bottom of the mountain IN the HQ are quite expensive.

Not sure of the name but if you wander down the hill back towards KK you will come across 2 or 3 on the left side of the road. There is a cheap restaurant opposite HQ too! Reply to this

Hi Guys,

If you dont mind a normal room with common bath, then you can opt for RM20-30 per night. Where as affordable accommodation with attached bathrooms are around a decent RM60 (on weekdays) and RM80-120 on weekends - that I would recommend Kinabalu Rose Cabin, about 15 minutes by foot from HQ.

Cheers!

I can't agree with you more life_is_great - diving in Sipadan is excellent! As long as one plans to visit Sabah, have both plenty time and extra cash, please make effort to visit Sipadan (even if you're not a diver, you can snorkel or soak up the sun - being there is the whole point). These are considered a "must-visit" destination. Sabah, by now, is among the world's best destinations with a unique "from mountain high to ocean deep" experience - all of this in just one state.

Enjoy!
