I plan to travel around the south island of NZ for atleast 2 weeks in May.
Does anyone have any idea how much I should be expecting to pay to rent a small and cheap as possible car?
Also, are there rules that would stop me from sleeping in the car in car parks/laybys?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Reply to this If there were rules against sleeping in laybys and car parks, could you not stay anywhere? Like the USA has motels, does NZ have them too?
I know a good car hire search engine if you'd like to try it
http://www.carrentals.co.uk it might help in finding you the cheapest deal.
Hope this helps~
Reply to this Hi Graham,
Welcome to TravelBlog.
There aren't any blanket rules forbidding sleeping in cars, but it would depend on each site - some may forbid it. Then again, whether they police it where forbidden, who's to know.
I would suggest searching for 'cheap car rentals' on google.co.nz (selecting 'only nz sites' of course) and do some comparing. If you are doing a one-way trip rather than returning to your starting point that will need to be taken into consideration with the rental agreement. An alternative would be to buy a cheaper second hand car and selling it at the end of your trip, if you consider the extra work to be worth it. Try
trademe.co.nz if you do want to buy.
You mentioned a small car - are you a tall person? I have a friend who did a six week trip round the South Island and slept in her car the whole trip, but she is small and had a station wagon.
Have an awesome trip!
