Any suggestions on places to visit in China but within a days trip from Hong-kong
16 years ago, January 6th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #25139
I'm going to be in Hong Kong for the Chinese New Year, and I've extended my trip by about 8 days to be able to go and visit China as well.

Does anyone have any favorite places/towns/villages/cultural spots on the boarder with hong-kong (within a days train/bus from hong-kong)?

Any tips or suggestions would be wonderful
thanks,

Hi Caroline, I'm mango.
Welcome to China!
Will u have a trip to the inland of China? Such as Beijing, Xian, Guilin, Guizhou and so on......8-days are enough to have a roaming trip around our China. I had a 9-days trip last
The towns, villages there are my favorite. Not only charming landscapes but also the interesting cultural activities.
Or you can send me email and chat me online with my msn account:
Wish you a good travelling at China!

It all depends on how many days you plan to spend and what you are interested in. Also notice that you require a visa to enter the mainland. If you simply want a taste of urban China (a marked difference once you cross the border) you can do as many people do; visit one of the fastest growing cities in the world, Shenzhen. The beauty of this city is that it is accessible via local train from Kowloon, you can even pay the fare with your subway card. Being a special economic zone, you can apply for a special short time visa at the border crossing as you arrive (hint: travel at odd hours, the queues will be especially long during holidays). As a tourist destination though, it has little to offer except for pirated goods and of course, excellent and tasty Chinese cuisine. The next big city is Guangzhou (Canton as the westerners used to say...), capital of the Guangdong province. It is enormous and vibrant, and easily accessible by train direct from Hong Kong.

You may also want to settle for travelling to the "outskirts" of Hong Kong, after all, Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are only a tiny piece of the entire HK S.A.R. There are a number of smaller villages around the area, although if you hope to find old men fishing with cormorants in rivers surrounded by limestone cliffs you will need to do a proper visa application and travel into the real mainland, for example to the above mentioned Guilin, which is a popular place for travellers of all kinds.
