Stupid O'Clock Flight from Don Muang
16 years ago, December 7th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #23815
Hi,

I have a flight from Don Muang at 6.05am on Sunday 30th December. It's domestic so do normal 1 hour check in rules apply? Also, how am I best trying to get to the airport at this time? Bare in mind I fly into Bangkok two days earlier (and have never visited the country before) so may be a bit clueless. Reply to this

Hi there. Here are possible options:

1. Taxi. It is not really difficult to get a taxi in the middle of the night. You can...

(a) ask the hotel staff to call one for you if there is none outside;
(b) prearrange with a taxi driver as most of them are eager to take your business... particularly if it's a flat-rate; or
(c) flag one down but you may need to go to the main streets.

My preference is (b). In my last stay, to my surprise, the driver slept in his vehicle all night outside my hotel. He never went home after dropping me off the night before.

2. Airport bus. This is the cheapest, but you will need to find out where they stop and when they are in service. I also do not know if they still go to the Don Muang airport.

3. Limo/private car. This is more expensive than taxi, but this can be easily arranged by yourself, through the hotel, or through a travel agent. If you arrange by yourself, then you'll save some money. Just walk up to any limo driver and tell him/her when you want to be picked up and never pay in advance.

Finally, while some may disagree with me, I would suggest leaving the hotel around 4 AM if travelling by taxi or limo. Your journey should take about 30 minutes or less, which gives you 90 minutes to check-in and clear security. It's best to be early than late. Reply to this

As HomerJS says, unless you stay in an obscure location in the suburbs or away from the main roads the streets will always be full of circling taxis even at this hour, though not as frequent as during daytime. Many hotels also have cabs waiting outside, some being touted by the staff. I've had some early flights like you and never had to wait for more than a few minutes before getting a ride as early as 3.30 in the morning. I also agree with the advice of leaving earlier, it is always better to allow some extra time to deal with any unforseen problems or situations, especially when an unrefundable airline ticket is at stake.
