I am travelling to China this summer and I have to change planes in Vienna. I have six hours between flights. Can anyone suggest anything to do/see that won't cost too much?
Reply to this Walk the Ring!
The Ring is where the old city walls used to stand, and when the city was bursting at the seams, they took the walls down and planned a lot of really lovely buildings, some of which were demolished in the war. At any rate, you'll see the opera house, the imperial complex, and the museum area. You could also check out parks and gardens, which should be really lovely this time of year, and either free or very cheap to see. Also if you try to figure out the normal trains and don't take the 9 Euro airport shuttle that is advertised everywhere, I think it costs 3 Euro, so you can save 12 Euro both ways. Have fun!
Reply to this Vienna is a very easy city to do in that time frame because its public transportation is so efficient. You can get a cheap train ticket from the airport into town and an all-day pass for a few euros.
Secession is by far the most interesting museum to see in Vienna. The grand neoclassical ones tend to be a bit boring and stodgy. The historic
Cafe Museum is my favorite place for a snack or cappuccino in the city.
I talk a little more about the city in my blog
Contemporaneity in the Toilets and Public Housing Projects, Modernity for Bigot Bankers and Cafe Dwellers.
Note that the other option is taking the train to Bratislava from the airport. I believe the trip is around an hour.
