Hi FiTe,

I've got some information on applying Cambodia visa. You can actually applied it online which save you alot of hassle. Apply and pay online, print out the copy and then you can use it while entering cambodia..

Assumming u're entering Cambodia through vietnam, u can try travelling by air with vietname airline. It'll cost you more or less about USD 165.
Never ask for Exchange at the airport- they give you 3800 Riel for a dollar- the local rate is always 4000 Riel to the Dollar. You'll lose alot to the forex exchange rate.

In case you need any extra details on business directories, you may ask from the restaurants, hotels or guest houses. Most of them have it.

Hope i can help you out a little.
Do msg me if you have any doubts at all

Hi Marcus,

Where online can you apply for the camobian visa?

Also, I looked at Vietnam airlines and the prices are much cheaper than what you say. Did you get your quote online, or is this the price you would pay for purchasing at the airport? Reply to this

Hello

If you plan to visit Penang, Malaysia, do let me know about it. Penang Island is one of the best known travel destinations in Asia. Places of interest includes the famous Penang hills and Kek Lok Si, the exotic beaches at Batu Ferringhi, Masterpiece colonial building such as Cheong Fatt Tze mansion, Khoo Kongsi and of course good and cheap food.
Let me know if you need further help or info.

You can compare the price for hotels in Asia, this site has many choices and easily compare the price. Hotelsguru.com , I have used it frequently. Reply to this

What I really am looking for is learning to know the countries the way they really are.
Meeting the local people, eating their food, ok I might get sick in the tummy, but it will pass.
Eating spider in Vietnam things like that. visiting local markets, Staying over at a guest family,
learning to cook their way, you get the picture.
It's all about the experiences we choose to make, that's what we'll be looking for.

So if any of you kind people can also give me any information where about these things.
It'll be great.

Thanks all so much for your input and great help!!!

Take all good care

Greetings

Well, Fite,
I have many contacts in Indonesia who speak some English and you can go on treks and visit their families village.
One of my favourite places is Muara Labuh ( 4hrs south west of Padang in West Sumatra- you pass the magnificent Twin Lakes on your way there) where few travellers go- not in the guide books.
First visited there in 1997 and now am friendly with many families. One young woman Reni I met in July 2000 on a roadside ( she was on holidays from Uni in Padang) is now back in the village with her own small English school and she would love to show you her village and experience all the food etc and you could spend a few hours encouraging the students to speak English.

There is a incredible homestay in this area just down the road that has an unbelievable chandelier hanging from the roof and dangling down 3 floors. Views from the balcony onto the rice fields is breathtaking.
Last year my friend Reni gatecrashed a local house warming and I had the time of my life. This very rich Indonesian contractor had built this incredible house and was celebrating. A once in a lifetime experience- fancied himself as an American- Texan- wore the big hat etc. Totally hilarious.
Reni, like most of most Indonesian contacts have mobile phones so are easily contactable. Suggest you take a mobile phone with you and buy a card in each of the countries you visit and then sms or text all your contacts with your new nos each time. Mobile texting is such an easy way to keep in touch with family and friends overseas. They can know in an instant you are o.k. whereas with internet it depends on the connection and when the internet cafe is open etc.
I never leave home without my mobile phone.
In 2000 in this area I was introduced to the Queen of the area and she organised for me and my friend to go on a trek in the jungle looking for gold along the river bed. Great experience.

You really need to consider getting a 60 day visa for Indonesia because it is made up of something like over 13,000 islands and each of the main islands is like another country.
You have my email address so feel free anytime to contact me and I will pass on all I know.

Anyone else wanting loads of info' on Indonesia, send me a PM and I will get back to you.
Some of my photos from my 5.5 month trip through Indonesia last year can be found at http://www.webshots.com/user/ppamela2006
Previous trip photos can be found here at http://community.webshots.com/user/ppamela1
and http://community.webshots.com/user/bunga2811
(Had to have different names until this year because there was a limit of 240 photos per person- now I pay so I can put up 5,000 photos.)

Hi FiTe,

Sorry for late reply. I was on vacation to Bangkok for 4 days. It was awesome!!!!
regarding applying Cambodian Visa, you can do it 2 ways, 1 is at the airport on arrival, another one is through online, i guess it's pretty easy to search through google, u'll get the right website on few of the top ranks.

Bangkok is really cool, is it in your must-go list?

Hey guys !

I am also kind of planning a trip to asia (in particularity southern asia.) that will take place in maybe 2 or 3 years. (yeah, i know - i'm early to do my plannings already haha) I haven't decided every detail of my trip yet ( i don't have precise dates or a precise itinary ), but i'm starting to think about the generals things - when i want my trip to take place, how much money i want to spend on this, how many months i'm going to go, etc. Countries I'd like to visit are India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepas, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia ans Indonesia. This isn't a 100 %!s(MISSING)ure list, only a first drawing of what my itinary would look like 😉

I have 2 questions, I don't know if any of you is in the position to fill me in..

1) The best time for my to do this trip would be during summer, because I have university during automn and winter (september - april). But I think in some of the countries I've mentionned above, during summer (may, june, july, august) it's the rainy season or something ? Because I remember this summer they were always talking about India in the news and how it was full of inondations dues to the raining... Have anyone here being in theses countries at this time of the year ? Is it THAT bad ?

2) If I want to leave for a 2 or 3 months trip, how much money do you think my trip will cost me ? (I'm not planning to travel 1st class and to stay in beach resorts haha, it will pretty much be economy class and youth hostels.) I know it depends of the activities you do and everything, but just a general number ? For example, would 7000 $ be enough ?

Thanks a lot for your help !

June July and August are ideal months to travel in Indonesia as it is their 'dry season'.

pPamela 😊 I checked your previous post.. Seems like you are became an expert of Indonesia :p thats pretty cool.
FiTe 😊 As I stated before that Indonesian people are very friendly. You would not have any problem to learn about the cultures and people here. I could say.. You can ask them friendly if you could walk in their kitchen and.. they will welcome you :p

You will need visa to enter Indonesia 😊

dear backwards54,

It's great you have these travel plans, and a very good step was to register here!
The people here are very friendly and helpful, they give you very good first hand information,
and answer all your questions. Being able to benefit of the experience of others is the most priceless
possession you can have of your trip or in preparation of it.
I started with mine with a book, "First time around the world" from "Rough Guide" very good book,
you should read it, it will take care of all the basic questions you have.

1) The seasons in which to travel, was a also a problem I had, but a thought it true.
In my position it just didn't matter because I friggered that just by traveling a few miles the problem would be solved. I know, at first it looks kind of ignorant, but I my case traveling for a year, it's not that stupid and also
I won't welt from a bit of rain and being from Belgium I'm used 2 it ;-))

2) Like you say, your budget depends on everything you want to do the biggest expenses are your excursions
food, sleep and travel. 7000$ is a lot of money if your only traveling for a 4 months. Youth hostels are a good way of saving good money and I suggest you travel as much as possible over land, it's cheaper and you'll get a
better experience, you'll more chance to meet people and see things.
But 7000$ is enough money to travel Asia, depending on how you will travel.
If you research it in books and on the net, the all come with a budget of 15 to 50$ a day depending on how you travel. But In my personal experience, the more money you take with you, the more you spent...
Also it's very important you have a back-up budget, money in reserve in case of emergency, a please have the discipline not to touch it!!! I learned the hard way, and I can tell you it's not very funny...

Also a good thing would be not to plan to much in advance, not knowing what/who you will encounter, it is hard to plan a trip perfectly in advance, it will never come true.
You should research your countries, look @ the places you would like too see, research possible sleeping places book the first one and go with the flow. It'll spice up your experience.

Have fun and take care!!!

Ps. To all who write, your just great!!! I wish I'd discovered you sooner!!! much much sooner, thanks for all!
