South Island by Camper Van. Any suggestions?

I have just arrived in Auckland and about to do the "Stray" bus tour of the North Island for a few months, working en route. I am hoping to do a tour of the South Island in a camper van and wanted to hear from anyone who has done this and could reccommend, suggest, advise... anything to me? Quite liked to idea of renting one of the very hippy looking painted ones but wondered if it'd be better buying and reselling at then end, has anyone done this?

Was hoping i'd meet good people looking to do similar and perhaps find a few to travel the South with too. Again, any adivce...

Finally, is Queenstown kicking at New Year and Christmas?

Hi,
You will love South Island if you are travelling in a hired camper van. There are lots of campervan hire companies with branches in both North Island and South Island where you can make a booking.

The biggest advantage is you can plan your trip and have the freedom to move around at your will. Choose a campervan that runs on diesel. You will save $

If you can find a mate to go along with you, that will be a great advantage as you can share your bills. There are lots of camper van parks all over South Island. The Top10 parks are great value for money (at NZ$30 per day) where you can camp for the night, run appliances like microwave and toaster as you need 240 V power. You can also use the dump station there.

You will save $ on accommodation and food. Queenstown can be expensive as it is the ultimate tourist spot in South Island. Be prepared to shell out $. Adventure sport like bungy jumping and jet boating are not cheap. Queenstown will be a ripper at Christmas and New Year. You will love the fun atmosphere.

Wishing you a happy trip
Cheers
