Do I need proof of income or savings?

I'm traveling from the US to an unchosen place in EU. I've never traveled to Europe. Is there a border check at some point where you have to prove you have a certain amount of money while you stay?

I ask, because I was crossing the border from US to Canada and they only allowed me entry the times I had cash on me.

It depends how long your staying for. I'm doing an exchange year in France and had to prove savings to get a visa, but it won't matter if you're just travelling through briefly. Reply to this

Cool. Because my real plan is to drift there, like I am traveling here. Work when I get it, hitch hike, panhandle, etc. I plan to do this for a few years, without visa of course. Reply to this

Legally this is no option.

You can only stay without a visa in the Schengen area for 90 days in any period of 180 days. Thus after 3 months you have to leave the Schengen area for 3 months before you can return.
