I am looking to do some volunteer work but all websites I have been on seem to charge a fortune just for a few weeks stay? Can anyone reccommend a company or website that is there to help the communities rather than make a profit?? I dont mind having to apay my way by £800 for 2 weks teaching english is crazy!!!

Am trying to tie this up with a year or so traveling.

Paul, I had the same idea about coming to China. It's quite hard to find volunteering opportunities for free. It's quite ironic. However, keep in mind that when you're in China you'll have to pay for your own housing, food, utilities, transportation, etc. The volunteer program should provide all this in the fee.

I volunteered a bit with Hands On Shanghai, which I enjoyed a lot. Hands On is flexible and there are all kinds of volunteer events. If you have the time to stay in one area, I would live there and try to become part of the community, and then decide what the needs are and what you have an interest in. I would have wanted to do it this way, but I became so busy with running around I didn't really get to involve myself in the community. I challenge you to find your own way to contribute to China! 😊

One thing that I came across in Shanghai is that there is a need for a donation center. For people to donate their like new household items and clothes and redistribute them to other parts of the city or province. Something that I wish I could do if I were here any longer.

Kudos to you for wanting to volunteer and contribute to the community. Enjoy your adventure! Reply to this

thanks for your reply. I have enough savings to pay my own way for a good while so I am not worried about that.

Hant really thought about China to be honest so that is def food for thought.

Anyone got anymore suggestions? Reply to this

hey paul...
I too had a similar dilemma aerlier this year...my friend and I wanted to travel for a long while and do some service work, but couldn't pay a fortune and didn't want a religiously affiliated organization. So, after much searching, we came across the International Humanitiy Foundation- IHF. They are wonderful. We read all about and talked to people who had worked with them and everyone was really pleased with their experiences. the only cost is $20 per week to help out with your room and food supplies to it doesn't take away from the kids' money. They have centers in Thailand, Indonesia, and kenya with work mainly in education, child/minor healthcare, and organizational stuff. They ask that you dedicate at least a month of time while your there, and they ask for some service work before hand in promoting them back at your home.
My friend and I start in a week in Thailand and then in March we do another month in Indonesia, so I can write more about it then...
Good luck with your searching!
