Hey all! I am a college student going to school in Alaska but I'm down in Idaho for the summer visiting the family, working at a local job, and seeing my old hometown. A friend of mine from Washington and I are roadtripping it back to school in Juneau. We're heading off to Williams Lake, Dawson Creek, Muncho Lake, Whitehorse, and then Skagway to catch the ferry back to our little school. That first night, I'm on my own in Osoyoos Lake State Park and was just wondering if anyone had any experience in ANY of these areas?? Anything particular about each city or somewhere in between that you just had to stop and see because it was amazing?!? Any bad experiences in any of these places? Did you need Canadian currency or was American fine? Do most places take American Visa cards? Are there very many coffee stands along the way (I am a coffee addict)? Any ATMS?? In Whitehorse, we're spending the night at the Hide-on-Jeckell hostel...anyone stayed there?? Any suggestions would be appreciated!! Thanks all!!!

Hi Kari:

You may want to get some Canadian currency before you go. Just about everywhere in Canada will take American currency but some places will gouge you on the exchange rate. Your American credit cards will be taken anywhere that Canadian credit cards are honored - and that's just about everywhere. You will have stretches of 100 miles or more in Northern BC and Yukon where there will be no coffee. Bring a large insulated travel mug and fill it up whenever you can - that's my advice. You will find ATMs in any town - but be careful as some places on the map are just crossroads and not real towns so don't count on every spot on the map having an ATM. It's a hell of a long drive from Osoyoos State Park to ANY of the places you mention. Like more than you can drive in one day. If you head north from Osoyoos you will be in the Okanagan Valley - one of the most beautiful places in Canada. The main city of the region is Kelowna and it's worth a stop. The next major city going north is Kamloops and it's a good place to find restaurants and lodging. Continuing north towards Dawson Creek you can go to Mt. Robson Provincial Park - spectacular mountain scenery. Here's British Columbia's great website for tourists: http://www.hellobc.com/en-CA/default.htm Have a great time. Reply to this
