I recently returned from a family vacation on a tour of Italy. I have one year of college left and then I would love to return to Italy, possibly for up to a year. Suggestions?

I recently returned from a family vacation on a tour of Italy. I have one year of college left and then I would love to return to Italy, possibly for up to a year. I have one year of college left, and then I would like to take a year off to explore. I do not want to travel necessarily; I would like for this to be more of a learning experience. I would be interested in working and finding a semi-perminant residence. I would love to live and work among locals- learn the language and more about Italian culture. Does anyone have any advice for me (including insurance and finances)? Thanks. Reply to this

I love Italy, learnt the language and now live there. I basically did what you are thinking of doing - based myself in one region and explored that region. It is the best way to really discover a country and if you do a language course at the same time you really get to know the region well.

For a little about my experience you can visit

Regarding language schools my wife has put together a selection - she is a language teacher and knows what to look for in a good school. These are her picks

I studied at Santa Reparata International School of Art in Summer 2005 (www.santareparata.org). I took their accelerated Italian courses - and loved it! Housing is in apartments throughout the city which they arrange for you, and class is 4 days a week, leaving weekends to explore. The school is in Florence which is a great location to spend a good amount of time in. If you have any questions about it, feel free to send me a message! 😊 Reply to this

Once in Rome, the first thing i thought about doing was seeing The Colosseum, only when you're there, can you realize it is the symbol of Rome. The amphitheatre was able to hold up to 55,000 spectators (like the TwinCities NFL stadium for the Minnesota Viking) as they watched gladiator fights, animal fights, etc. It took 10 years to construct. But to find out what's the best part you should check why architets of today still marvel at the design: The Colosseum can be emptied in about 12 minutes (see if your stadium can be emptied that quickly next time you are at a major sporting event)! Dont you think you can get in there and find out for yourself what other tricks are in the Colosseum?
Thanks for the chance to let me write, greeting from TwinCities hostel of Rome Reply to this

Hi There-
After college I moved to Rome and was teaching English. I did a course at the Byron School in which I received my TEFL certification after. It was hard to find a job after the course as I did not have citizenship or a permesso di soggiorno. I just recently moved back to Italy and am living here now freelance writing. You will be able to get an apartment (practice your language first) but gettign a job is a little more difficult if you are not an EU citizen. My friends who were British and Australian had no problem finding work but it was difficult for us Americans. Also, outside of the big cities is easier.
Hope this helps. Check out my blog for an idea of what our day to day life in Italy is like.
